Agartala is the capital city of the state Tripura (one of the seven northeastern states of India). Blessed with natural beauty, it is a slice of paradise on earth. This place lies in the northeast region of India situated on the banks of river Haora which is close to the Bangladesh border.  The name Agartala has been derive from the ‘Agar’ means valuable perfume tree and ‘tala’ means a store house. Literally it means a place having heavy density of Agaru tree. Tripura has a fascinating history. Tripura served as the capital to several noted Hindu kingdoms. According to the mythological and archeological evidence, the glory of this region was evergreen. This region was ruled by Mughal. Later in 1808, it was taken over by the British. Maharaj Bir Bikram Kishore Manikya Bahadur, the last king of the state, was the founder of modern city of Agartala. It is a well-planned city in the state of Tripura. It is a developing city with numerous tourist sites. Tourism gives a vision into the rich history of Agartala. As Agartala is a land of full of historical monuments, ancient buildings, museums, the city is now a fast-growing town culturally and commercially. Some major attractions include – Ujjayanta Palace, Neer Mahal, Kunjaban palace, Fourteen Goddess Temple and so on. 

Main Attractions
  • Ujjayanta Palace, Agartala: The Ujjayanta Palace is also known as Ujjoyonto Prashad, situated on the banks of a lake. This palace was built by Maharaja Radhakishore Manikya in the Indo-Saracenic architectural style during 1899 to 1901. The name of this palace was given after the Nobel Laureate, Rabindranath Tagore. This palace consists of several Hindu temples dedicated to Lakshmi Narayan, Uma-Maheshwari, Kali and Jagannath.
  • Kunjaban Palace, Agartala: Kunjaban Palace is a great monument built by King Birendra Kishore Manikya in 1917. In present time, it is used as the dwelling of the Governor of the State of Tripura. This Palace displays the rich artistic taste of the ruler. Before, this palace was named as ‘Pushbanta Palace’. There are well laid gardens and lawns inside the palace.
  • Malancha Niwas, Agartala: It is a major attraction in Agartala. The bungalow is adjacent to the Kunjaban Palace. This is originally a Kutcha house where Rabindranath Tagore, who was the great Indian poet and writer stayed here influenced by the natural beauty during his visit to Agartala in 1919. This magnificent house wins away the heart of the tourists.
  • Fourteen Goddess Temple. Agartala: Fourteen Goddess Temple is also known as the Chaturdasha Temple. This temple was built by King Krishna Manikya Debbarma of Tripura in 1761. It was built in honour of fourteen deities, together called the Chaturdasha Devata. It is one of the most interesting temple that attracts a lot of tourist from all over India.
  • Buddha Temples, Agartala: Buddhist Temples in Tripura support the fact that Buddhism is quite prevalent in the state. Archaeological evidences have suggested that Buddhists have inhabited the region since ancient times. Several Buddhist rulers ruled over the state and left permanent influences on the culture of the state. It is believed that Buddhists have inhabited the region since ancient times after the archaeological evidences.
