Resting on the north-eastern foot of Satpura on the shore of river Wainganga, Balaghat is surrounded by Rajnandgaon, Mandla, Bhandara and Seoni in its eastern, northern, southern and western borders respectively. Originally a Gond capital, Balaghat was ruled by Gonds, Bhonsle Marathas, Maratha Peshwas and British before acceding to Indian State.
Mother Nature it seems has been very partial to this small burg which is evident by its cache of forest and mineral reserves. More than 52% of the province is covered with woods of teak, saja, sal and bamboo and provides shelter to a potpourri of animalia including leopards, tigers, nilgai, gaur, bears, deers, peacocks, koyal and bulbul. Also the area has country’s largest stash of Manganese and Copper, in fact India receives 80% of its manganese supplies from the mines of Balaghat. Other minerals found in abundance are Bauxite, Kyanite and Lime Stone.

Main Attractions
  • Kanha National Park: Believed to be the inspiration behind Rudyard Kipling’s ‘The Jungle Book’, this tiger reserve is distinguished for its population of big cats, the royal Bengal tiger. Sprawling in an area of 940 square kilometer the park is stretched in two districts of MP, Mandala and Balaghat. Other than tigers the national park provides shelter to leopards, foxes, jackals, wild cats and dogs. One of the highlights of the park is providing shelter and rehabilitation to nearly extinct barasingha or swamp deer and black buck.
  • Gangulpara Tank and Waterfall: Placed on Baihar road, this waterfall is known for its panoramic view and is a popular weekend getaway for locals and tourists.  14 kilometers outside the city, the location also serves as a storage tank to waters of Ghysri Nala to suffice the water need of the populace.
