On April 1st1993, Baragarh came into existence as one of the developed districts in the state of Odisha. The original name of Bargarh was known from the inscription of the 11th Century A.D. as “Baghar Kota”. Probably from the time of the Chauhan Raja of Sambalpur, it was called as Bargarh. It is said that the name of Bargarh has been derived from Balaramgarh, as it was the cluster of forts(Garhs). It is dotted with many temples and Buddhist monasteries. History of Bargarh also suggest that Buddhism took place here and played a role in defining the lifestyle of the people for a short period of time.
