Located on the southern banks of the Ganges River, Bhagalpur is the 2nd largest city in Bihar. It is one of the major educational, commercial and political of the state. It is one of the oldest cities of Bihar, which is renowned as the ‘Silk City’ of the country. The silk Industry of the town has been grown since hundreds of years old by the local artisans, known as Tussar Silk from which Tussar Saree (Bhagalpuri silk sarees) is manufactured. Apart from this the city holds historical as well as religious importance, which is dated back to 7th century. The name of the city “Bhagalpur” derive from “Bhagdatpuram” which means “Good Luck”.

Main Attractions
  • Khanqah-e-Shahbazia, Bhagalpur: It is located nearby Bhagalpur, and is one of the most sacred pilgrimage sites for Muslims from the time of Mughal era.
  • Maharshi Mehi Ashram, Bhagalpur: It is situated along the river side; thus Bhagalpur has grown into a sacred spiritual spot for thousands as saint maharshi spent many years in intense meditation.
  • Mandar Parvat, Bhagalpur: It is widely known as Mandar Hill, where two temples on the top of the hill belonging to Hinduism and Jainism followers. The mountain has a revered standing in Hindu mythology, and it was this hill that was used for churning the ocean to extract the nectar from its bosom, Samudra Manthan.
  • Vikramshila Gangetic Dolphin Sanctuary, Bhagalpur: It is famous for Gangetic Dolphins which is also called Soons, declared as endangered. The Sanctuary provides safe abodes to a rich diversity of other threatened aquatic wildlife such as freshwater turtles and 135 other species
  • Vikramshila University, Bhagalpur: It was one of the two most important set of Buddhist learning in ancient India during the Pala dynasty. It had an equal footing along with N?land? University in the domain of Buddhist learning.
  • Mount Mandara, Bhagalpur: It is the name of a mountain which is an integral part of the Samudra manthan mentioned in the Hindu Puranas. The major feature of the hill that is worth appreciating is that the mountain is not composed of fragmented stones but is one single structure.
  • Dargah of Ghuran Sah Pir Baba, Bhagalpur: It is located near the Kutchery Chowk is extremely popular among followers of various religions such as Muslims, Sikhs and Hindus. Every friday large number of people assemble here for the blessings of 'Peer Baba', who is believed to mastered sacred powers.
  • Kuppaghat, Bhagalpur: The ghat has beautiful orchards and gardens showcasing paintings from the Ramayana. Many believe that Buddha inhabited the area in his previous birth.
  • Ajgaivinath Dham, Bhagalpur: It is one of the most important temples of Bhagalpur with the main deity worshipped being that of Lord Shiva. The existence of the temple is shrouded in mystery.

  • By Air – The domestic airport located in Patna, the capital city of Bihar, provides the nearest air connectivity to Bhagalpur district, situated 235 km away from the place. An international airport, it is well connected with all the key cities of India, through almost all the major airlines.
  • By Railway – Bhagalpur railway station, one of the oldest junctions of India, serves the Hawrah-Kiqel loop-Line. The city is situated on the broad-gauge Loop Line of Eastern Railway, which connects Kiul to Burdwan. Some of the important railway junctions of Bihar, including Sultanganj, Bhagalpur, Sabour and Kahalgaon, are located on this line.
  • By Road – Bhagalpur is connected by an excellent network of national and state highways, along with district and rural roads. National Highway 31 (NH 31) runs through the Navgachia Sub-Division of Bhagalpur district. It links the subdivisions of the district directly with Patna, via Begusarai and Khagaria. It also runs up to Guwahati, via Purnea-Kishanganj.
