Bishnupur is a land of great historical place. It is one of the most important towns because of the Loktal Lake, one of the largest fresh water lakes in the North-East Region in Manipur. This splendid place is dotted with dome-shaped terracotta temples. Bishnupur is also known as Bishenpur. Earlier, this place was known as Lumlangdong. Many Japanese tourists come here to visit Bishnupur to pay homage their departed ancestors, who died in the World War II and other battles in history. It is a home place to the dancing deer- Sangai, one of the rare breed of deer that can be found in the world today. As there are several historical temples in Bishnupur, it is popularly known as temple city. It was believed that Lord Vishnu resided here, people worship to Lord Vishnu at the Vishnu Temple premises that was built in the 15th century. Thus, the name of this town Bishnupur got its name from the idol of Lord Vishnu as a precious gift to King Kyama, who became the king after Kyang. Apart from this Bhisnupur offers some popular attractions that include - Loktak Lake, Keibul Lamjao National Park, INA Memorial and Loukoipat Ecological Park and so on.

Main Attractions
  • Loktak Lake, Bishnupur: Loktal Lake is one of the most significant and major tourist destination in Manipur. It is in the holy and historical place of Bishnupur. It is the largest freshwater lake in Northeast India. This lake is an iconic lake is known for its circular floating swamps (called phumdis in the local language).
  • Keibul Lamjao National Park, Bishnupur: Keibul Lamjao National Park is one and only floating National Park in the world. This park is an integral part of Loktal Lake. This park was declared as a sanctuary in 1966. Later in 1977, this park was declared as a national park. The Manipur Cervus eldii, which is also called as dancing deer or sangai, listed as an endangered species by IUCN. The name Cervus eldis eldi was given in the honour of Lt. Percy Eld – a British officer. Tourist can also come through with two sub species found in Burma and Thailand that are called Cervus eldii thamin and Cervus eldii siamensis and other species from Cambodia, China, Laos, Thailand, Vietnam and Hainan Island.
  • Red Hill (India Peace Memorial), Bishnupur: Red Hill is a Peace Memorial of India where many soldiers died here during World War II. Many people from all over the world comes here to give homage. Japanese and Australian envoys take part in the 71st anniversary of Red Hill war in Manipur. They visit here to spread the message of world peace through a war commemoration programme in Manipur.
  • Loukoipat, Bishnupur: Loukoipat is an ecological park and a prime tourist attraction of Bishnupur. There is lake surrounding the park and the lush greenery makes it a beautiful place for every traveller. The park is consisting of a Rock Garden, Hawa Ghar, Circular Path and a Japanese Pond. Best for families and kids to spend some quality time here. There are also boating facilities too.
  • INA Memorial, Bishnupur: INA Memorial is a popular site and a very important place connected to World War II and many tourists would love to visit the place. This was established in 1985 giving tribute to Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose and the INA personnel who hoisted the Indian national Tri-Color flag at Moirang in Manipur.
