Chanderi is a historical town in Ashoknagar District of the state of Madhya Pradesh. As per history, it is believed that Chanderi was founded by Lord Krishna's cousin Shishupala. This town is surrounded by hills, lakes and forests situated in an extremely healthy climate in the valley of the ancient Betwa river in Madhya Pradesh. As it has a historical importance there are several tributes of the Malwa sultans & Bundela Rajputs. The history of Chanderi has gone through many ruler’s hand. Later in 1861, it was finally transferred to Sindhias in Gwalior by Hug Rose. The city of Chanderi is known to have 1200 Baolis in the past. There are several Jain temples dates back to 9th and 10th century. This attracts thousands of Jain pilgrims and tourist too. There are approximately 375 monuments in Chanderi. Apart from this, Chanderi is amongst the best-known handloom clusters. Chanderi weavers discovered Japanese silk in 1930 and began substituting this in the warps in cotton sarees. It is home to the exquisite Chanderi Sarees renowned for traditional weavers of sarees center which are unmatched and sophistication.
