Changanassery is a tourist destination place located in the Kottayam district of Kerala state. Earlier, Changanassery was known as Anchu Vilakinte Pattanam or “The City of Five Lamps”. During old time, this city was a major trading hub of Kerala. After the War in year of 1750 at Changanassery, the city was captured by the King Marthanda Varma. Changanassery was spelled as Changanacherry. Later in the year 1991, the state government corrected to Changanassery officially. In AD-90, Changanasseri entered into the Indian history books. It is believed by some people that the name was derived from a place named “Changanatuseri”. There is an interesting tale of a king behind the name of Changanassery who belongs to Lakshmipuram Palace during the reign of the Thekkucore King. The king wanted to hear "Shankhu Vili (Temple-Counch Sound), Mani Nadam (Church-Bell Sound) and Bankh Vili (Masjid-Prayer Sound) daily and so he a Temple, Church and Masjid around the palace. When the words Shankhu + Nadam + Seri are put together, the name Changanasseri is made. The place has an ancient history that dates back to 12th to 13th century C.E. Prof. N. E. Keshavan Nampoothiri was the only historian who studied the details of Thekkumkoor. This is an important pilgrimage center for all devotees. It is busy little Gateway to the High Ranges (the mountainous border of the Kerala state) and Kuttanadu. Some of the popular tourist attractions are - Perunna Subramanyaswami Temple, Vazhappally Maha Temple, Parel St. Mary's Syro Malabar Catholic Church, Puthurpally Juma Masjid and others.

  • Perunna Subramanyaswami Temple, Changanassery:   It is a well-known Hindu Temple located in Changanassery. The main deity is Murugan that is worshipped in the temple. Murugan is one of the three sons of Lord Vishnu. The deity is in the form of Devasenapathi, the supreme general of the holy forces. It is worth visit if you want to see the classical Kerala style of architecture.
  • Vazhappally Temple, Changanassery:    It is a Hindu temple that is located Vazhappally near Changanassery. This temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva. In the 1st Chera King Dynasty, this temple was founded by Lord Parasurama. He is believed to be the 6th incarnation of Lord Vishnu.  
  • Thrikodithanam Temple, Changanassery:  Thrikodithanam Temple is another Hindu temple that is also dedicated to Lord Vishnu. This temple has an old connection with the five Pandava Brothers that is depicted in the Mahabharata Epic. It is considered as an ancient and sacred temple in the state of Kerala. Thousands of devotees visit this temple throughout the year.  
  • Parel St. Mary's Syro Malabar Catholic Church, Changanassery: It is also known as Valiyapally and also a Marian pilgrimage places of Christians in Changanassery.   It is a serene place to visit and among one of the biggest Church of the Saint Thomas Christian. It is the second largest Eastern Catholic Church in the city.  
  • Lakshmipuram Palace, Changanassery: This palace is in Kottayam District of Kerala. It was the seat of the royal family of Koil Thampurans. This palace is also known as Raja Raja Varma Koil Thampuran. It is another attraction who comes to visit Changanassery.
  • Kavil Bhagavathi Kshetram, Changanassery: It is an ancient shrine near the Munsif Court. This temple is also known as Kavil Ambalam and Sree Bhagavathi Temple. Kavil chirappu is a unique festival that is celebrated in this temple annually in the month of December – January.
  • Puthoor pally Juma Masjid, Changanassery: This mosque is also known as Pazhayapalli. It is 950 years old mosque and is one of the most famous ones of Central Travancore. Thangal adiyanthiram festival is celebrated annually to mark the community feast. Another festival named the Chandanakuddam festival attracts thousands of crowds during this event.
