Main Attractions
  • Dhubela Museum: Housed in an old fort on the banks of a lake, Dhubela Museum comprises 8 galleries that showcase inscriptions, lingas, sati pillars and much more pertaining to Gupta and Kalchuri dynasties. The actual palace was commissioned by Maharaja Chhatrasal and stores a wide variety of idols of Shakti Peeth as well as important Jain tirthankars. The palace now converted into a museum stores a vast collection of artifacts and vestiges of bygone Bundela culture. The heirlooms at display include weaponry, adornments, paintings, stones and coins. Other important edifices are cenotaph of Maharaja Chhatrasal dedicated by Baji Rao Peshwa to Maharaja Chhatrasal, Cenotaph of Maharani Kamlapati, Sheetal Garhi – a residential building, Maheba gate. Maharaja Chhatrasal opposed and fought mughal emperor Aurangzeb and enjoys a cult status in Bundeli history and each one of the buildings commissioned by him sheds a light on the rise, fall and hey days of a tribe, of a society called Bundela.
  • Khajuraho group of monuments: Designed and created in 10th and 11th centuries by Chandela rulers Khajuraho group of monuments with their 85 temple sites are among the finest and most vivid examples of temple architecture in the world. Swathe with most intricate and sophisticated sculptures and carvings the temples are dedicated to and equally divided amongst Vaishnavism, Shaivism and Jainism sects. Allegorical to all Hindu shrines, all temples of Khajuraho with an exception to one face east or the rising sun. The design and planning of temples assimilate both masculine and feminine forces of ‘Purush’ [man] and ‘Prakriti’ [nature] symbolized by male and female deities showcasing the interdependence of one on the other and vice versa. A commom misconception about Khajuraho temples is that all the carvings and sculptures adorning the temple layout are erotic in nature. Nothing however, could be farther from truth, only 10% of these engravings are erotic displaying sexual practices among men and women, as Hinduism as a religion and practice treats kama or sex as an integrate and indispensable element of human existence and life. A best part of the temple art portrays other every day, banal and spiritual segments of life. There are paintings and engravings of potters, farmers, musicians, women putting on makeup and people leading their lives in medieval India. The ingenuity of Khajuraho artisans details all four cardinal elements of Hinduism – kama, artha, dharma and moksha.
