Chitrakoot is a small town in Satna district of Bundelkhand region. The hilly hamlet literally meaning ‘Hills of many wonders’ falls in Vindhya range and shares its borders with adjoining Chitrakoot district of Uttar Pradesh. Known to have been the abode of Hindu deity Lord Rama during if exile of 14 years Chitrakoot is of maintains great religious influence on Hindus all over the word. Blessed with an abundance of flora and fauna including monkeys and bears Chitrakoot was much favoured during Vedic period and one find its mention in every religious text written during the time – Ramayana [believed to be the first ever epic written], Mahabharata, Raghuvansh [penned by great poet Mahakavi Kalidasa where he goes on and on about the aesthetics of this wilderness], Ramcharit Manas, Kavitawali, Dohawali and Vinaya Patrika [by Goswami Tulsidas].    
The prominence of Chitrakoot is further intensified by the fact that a number of eminent wise men and holy beings either make it their home or came to these woods to meditate some worth mentioning are Rishi Attri and Dattatreya, Sati Ansuya, Maharishi Markandeya even the celebrated Hind poet Rahim one of the nine gems of the court of mughal emperor Akbar sought refuge in this forest after Akbar’s death. The pious river Mandakini mentioned in a number of historical religious texts it is said used to pass through ‘Chitrakoot Vana [jungle]’
 
Main Attractions
  • Ramghat: Ramghat or the bank of river Mandakini is today revered by the Hindu adherents, it has to be for Lord Rama, the seventh carnation of Vishnu once frequented these ghats, took his daily baths on these banks. The place in know thronged by his devotees to have their share of divinity merely by visiting it.    
  • Janki Kund: Much like Ramghat, Janki Kund is the place where Devi Sita, partner of Lord Ram used to perform her ablutions on the banks of Mandakini. Devi Sita herself is idolized as a deity, not because of being the wife of lord Rama but because of being an exemplary woman and dutiful partner and ‘ardhangini’ [literally meaning better half] in true sense.
  • Kamadgiri: Of the many hills in Chitrakoot Parvat Mala [or mountain range], Kamadgiri is most deified for being the actual abode of Lord Rama, along with his companion Devi Sita and his brother Kumar Laxman. Encircled with temples all along its border the prayers here are offered in a unique way by taking Parikramas [circumambulate] of the hill, a 5 km walk done on foot.
  • Bharat Milap: Upon learning that his brother Rama was exiled by his mother kumar [prince] Bharat, not only refused to accede the throne but also took a journey along with the queen mothers and entire populace of Ayodhya to persuade Lord Rama to return and take his rightful seat on the throne. A detailed description of this very moving and tearful encounter between the two brothers is given in Ramayana. Bharat Milap is the very place where the two brothers embraced each other and had arguments and detailed discussion.
  • Sphatic Shila: A little away from Sita Kund lays another hinterland amidst thick forests. Here one notices human footprints believed to be that of Lord Rama and Devi Sita. It is said that Lord Rama and his brother Laxman were sitting on this very rock [shila] when Hanumana returned from Lanka after locating the whereabouts of where Devi Sita is kept by Ravana after her abduction.
  • Hanuman Dhara: When Hanuman returned from Lanka setting it ablaze, lord Rama created a spring to appease him as per the descriptions, this spring perched on a lifted hill face is called Hanuman Dhara. Being stationed on an elevation, the place commands a bird’s eye view of Chitrakoot.
  • Bhadaiya Kund: A popular picnic spot, Bhadaiya Kund is a natural spring rich in high mineral content because of which it is believed to have curative or medicinal powers.
