Datia or Daityavakra of past [as mentioned in Mahabharata] is a small princely state on the borders of Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh. The city was created in early 16th century when the first ruler Rao Bhagwan Rao received it in inheritance from this father Raja Bir Singh Deo of Orchha. The town is flourishing because of being the home to a number of religious institutions mainly Hindu. 

Main Attractions
  • Peetambra Peeth: Shri Peetambra Peeth is a sort of club of Hindu temples dedicated to the goddess. The peeth is a tapobhoomi [a seat for meditation] and a Shaktipeeth. Among the most noteworthy are the temples of goddesses Bagalamukhi and Dhumavati, deity Hanuman, Parashuram [seventh carnation of Hindu trinity God Vishnu] and Kal Bhairav. Created in 1920’s the peeth also has a library dedicated solely to the promotion and advancement of Sanskrit language. The library houses a treasure of books containing texts on secret mantras, tantras and sadhnas. One such potent mantra is the Bagalamukhi Mantra to conquer powers on control sentiments of enmity against one’s rivals or enemies. Another important structure which demands a mention here is the Vankhadeshwar Shiva Temple, the Shivlingham established in the temple is found by the archeologists to be as old as the time of Mahabharata.      
  • Satkhanda Palace: Maharaja Bir Singh Dev, founder of the Datia state was a big patron of art and built 52 palaces during his life time, of these structures, Satkhanda Palace stands out as a masterpiece. The seven story building stands on a huge rock and can be spotted from a distance, constructed totally with stone without using either iron or wood; the architecture of the building is an amalgamation of Mughal-Rajput Styles. Some parts of the palace are done very stylishly with pictorial designs and stone hewn on windows however, the members of the royal clan never lived in this palace for a day. 
  • Rajgarh Palace and Museum: Anchored on foot of Maniyagarh hills, near Peetambra Peeth Rajgarh Palace is a fine example of pure Bundeli architecture. The palace was built by Bundela chieftain Shatrujit Bundela. A part of the palace is now converted into museum and stores a vast collection of artifacts including coins and stones relating to Bundelkhandi culture.   
  • Badoni: 10 kilometers outside Datia exits a small constituency famous for Buddhist and Jain Temples build during Gupta reign. Other than temples there are also a score of Hawelis and Forts which designate this small village town as a heritage site.
  • Botanical Garden: A natural forestland under the care of Forest Department on Datia Bhander Road.
