Dhenkanal is a popular district that is divided in to three natural divisions - Southern hilly region, the river Valley with tributaries, the northern hilly region. This region is bordered by other popular tourist destination places of Odisha such as Kendujhar, Jajpur, Cuttack, Anugul and Dhenkanal. The area is covered with dense forest and a long range of hills. Formerly it was the princely state in the state of Odisha. It also has a long history. It is said that some facts were gathered from the Nasik Rock inscription during 2nd Century which shows that Dhenkanal was the part of Satvahana empire. After that it came under Ganga dynasty. Then Suryavamsis had emerged, where this region was scattered in many small kingdom. The name of this district has been derived from a tribal chief namely ‘Dhenka’, who ruled over Ghumuranali, Dudianali &Kantanali. After being defeated by Sridhar Bhanja of Besalia, he named the kingdom as ‘Dhenkanal’. Tourism has played an important role in terms of economy and development of this area. There are many age-old temples and other local sightseeing where tourist can explore this historical place. The chiming of temple bells fill the air with spiritualism where one can have the religious experience. 

Main Attractions
  • Saptasajya, Dhenkanal: It is a popular tourist place to visit in Dhenkanal. It is a scenic beauty place ideal for picnic and relaxation. ‘Pandavas’ of Mahabharata spent some of their days in this place during their Angyantavasa. The main attractions are the Saptarishi Temple and Raghunath Temple that attracts many devotees from all over Odisha.
  • Kapilash, Dhenkanal: Kapilash is popular for the Kapilash temple, about 2239 feet above the sea level situated in the north east of Dhenkanal town. This place is located at 26km from the district Head Quarters. The temple was constructed by Narasinghdeva I for Sri Chandrasekhar in 1246 A.D. surrounded by a dense forest. There is also a deer park that attracts a lot of tourist and devotees during Maha Shiva Ratri.
  • Naganatheswar Temple, Dhenkanal: Naganatheswar is another popular tourist temple that is situated at 20km from Dhenkanal. This temple is dedicated to Naganatheswar Shiva or Lord Shiva which was founded during the reign of the Keshari dynasty.
  • Joranda, Dhenkanal: Joranda is located at 25km from Dhenkanal. It is the centre of attraction for all the believers of the dharma. Newly, Kadua Tapobana and Mahima temple is constructed that reflects the Mahima culture in Dhenkanal.
  • Deulijhar, Dhenkanal: It is situated at 12 km from Dhenkanal. It is famous for the Mahima Temple and the seat of Mahima Dharma. Many devotees come here for offering prayers.
