Gulmarg is a hill station and a very popular skiing destination located in Baramula district of Jammu and Kashmir. The region was once known as Garuimarg in the honour of Goddess Gauri or Parvati. Its present name was given by Sultan Yusuf Shah of the Chak Dynasty in 16th Century. This small hill station is in the heart of Pirpanjal Range at an altitude of 2650 meters. Due to its height the summers are cool, and winters are very cold covering the region with snow. Gulmarg is now winter sports capital of India and is considered one of the best in Asia. The town offers variety of options for winter sports ranging from skiing, tobogganing, snowboarding and heli-skiing which happens on the slopes Mount Apharwat.
