Hampi is a village and a temple town located in Northern Karnataka. Listed as UNESCO World Heritage site it was once the richest and largest city in ancient times. Hampi today lies in the ruins of capital of Vijayanagara Empire city of Vijayanagara. The village contains various temples of which Virupaksha Temple is of most significance. The region around the peak of Vijayanagar Empire which is usually considered around 1500 CE had 500,000 living in the area making it second largest city after Beijing. The site of Hampi though predates Vijayanagara Empire and first recorded settlement in the area dates to 1 century CE. Throughout the village of Hampi there are many Hindu temple some notable being Achyutaraya Temple, BadaviLinga, Chandramauleshwara Temple, Malyavanta Raghunathaswamy temple, Hazara Rama Temple Complex etc. There are also few Jain Temples in the area. There are various important sites near the village namely Anjeyanadri Hill which is considered as birthplace of Hindu God Hanumana, Anegundi which contains huge rock boulders, water reservoirs and amazing scenic outlook, the famous Monolithic cut out of Hindu God Narasimha is also present near Hampi.
