Idukki is one of the most nature-rich destinations in the state of Kerala. It is also called as ‘God’s Own District’ as one can witness His creation in this Idukki Hill Station. Periyar, Thalayar and Thodupuzhayar and their tributaries are the three main rivers that flow through high hill ranges and wooded valleys.  It is known for its Mountainous Hills and Dense Forests and is known as the ‘Diocese of the Mountains’. The uniqueness of the environment makes tourist feel like home.  The name ‘Idukki' has been derived from the word 'Idukku' which means a narrow gorge in Malayalam language. It is one of the beautiful hill stations surrounded by lush greenery with small water pools, tea gardens and high hills. It is a home to Anamudi, one of the highest peaks in South India. Idukki Dam which is a popular dam and is the Asia's second largest arch dam offers beautiful rides in backwaters of the lake. As per Government of India, the district was formed on 26th January 1972 and was inaugurated by Shri D. Babu Paul, the first District Collector. At that time, the district headquarters started functioning at Kottayam and after that in June 1976 it was shifted to Painavu in Thodupuzha taluk. Idukki as a popular tourist destination offers diverse attractions like wildlife sanctuaries, high hills, spice plantation, mountain, elephant rides, backwaters etc. A visit to Kalvari Mount, Kulamavu, Palkulamedu and Nedumkandam Hill is a must for trekking lovers. 

Main Attractions
  • Idukki Dam, Idukki: It is a dam that is constructed across the Periyar River. It is a double curvature arch dam and one of the highest arch dams in Asia. This dam is owed by the Kerala State Electricity Board. An artificial lake has been created that attracts a lot of tourist. 
  • Hill View Park, Idukki: Hill View Park is a worthy tourist place nearby the Idukki Dam. It has become one of the most popular tourist destination in Idukki. Tourist can have the best view of Idukki arch dam from the top of the hill. Great place for photography. There is an eco-park where tourist can relax. 
  • Painavu, Idukki: Painavu is situated amidst the Idukki Wild Life Sanctuary,It is a stopover place for the tourist travelling to Idukki and Cheruthoni Dam. It is a shopper's paradise as the place is famous for its local handicrafts, silk and beautiful local clothes.
  • Murikkady, Idukki:  Murikkady is an ideal picnic spot and an unending chain of hills and spice plantations. Murikkady is also a panorama of cardamom, coffee and pepper plantations too. The place offers a cool, salubrious climate and the fresh air with the exotic fragrance of many spices. 
  • Mangala Devi Temple, Idukki: Mangala Devi Temple is a 1000-year-old temple dedicated to the deity of Mangaladevi, who is also known as Kannaki. Kannaki has remained a symbol of the great moral power that even an ordinary woman is capable of. It stands at an altitude of 1337 m above the sea level.
  • Anakkara, Idukki: Anakkara is a small hamlet in Idukki which lies between Munnar and Thekkady. The village is being developed as a Spice Tourism Circuit (STC). The spice shops here offer you a variety of spices of tantalizing aroma and freshness where tourists can avail the services of tourist guides.
  • Devikulam or the Sita Devi Lake: Devikulam is also known as Sita Devi Lake surrounded by lush green hills. It is believed to be the lake where Devi Sita bathed in the river. The sparkling clear water has curative properties as well. It is also an ideal place for picnic. 
  • Thattekkad Bird Sanctuary: The Thattekkad Bird Sanctuary is home to almost 500 species of rare birds. It is also known as Salim Ali Bird Sanctuary after the name Salim Ali, who was one of the best-known ornithologist. Literally, Thattekkad means flat forest. Tourist can watch varieties of birds as it is like almost a miniature world of birds in this sanctuary.

  • By Road – Idukki is well linked by State transport buses from all parts of Kerala.
