The city’s root can be traced back to 16th century when it was an important trading link between Delhi and Deccan, the city was the seat of Maratha (Holkar) Empire. It is said that the city was founded by one Rao Nandlal Choudhary in 1710 and planned, build and developed by Ahilyabai Holkar, an excellent administrative and military strategist whose vision and meticulous planning changed a village into its present-day avatar. British during Raj also promoted Indore and did their bit in developing the city by establishing British Residency as well headquarters there. Other than being an important trading hub, Indore is also famous for its cloth industry. While Chanderi and Maheshwari sarees from Indore are a favorite throughout the nation, local artisans have mastery in preparing fabrics decked with zari work, hand block painting, tie and dye.
