Jajpur is a popular pilgrimage tourist destination which was an ancient capital of state Odisha. It is situated on the right bank of river Baitarani. The name Jajpur got its name from Somavanshi king of the early 10th century named ‘Jajata Kesari’. Jajpur is also known as Jajapur. Popularly known as Biraja Khetra which means “the place sacred to Goddess Biraja” mentioned in Sanskrit in the Mahabharata. This place has also been described in the Brahmanda Purana, Vayu Purana, Brahma Purana and others. It was a flourishing city during the King Somavanshi’s rule and made Jajpur his capital which have achieved the pinnacle of glory in archaeological excellence. Somavanshi was one of the most powerful dynasties that ruled over Odisha. Before 01st April 1993, it was the part of Cuttack District in Odisha. This place has a high cultural importance too because of its historical monuments, painting, architecture, sculpture and handicrafts. Jajpur is also known as temple city as there are numerous eminent temples in this region. Being a popular pilgrimage destination, it attracts thousands of devotees and visitors.
