Jalandhar is an important and ancient city in the state of Punjab. Jalandhar was the capital of Punjab from India’s independence in 1947 until Chandigarh came into existence in 1953. Formerly, Jalandhan is also known as Prasthala in the Mahabharatha. Then it was renamed as ‘Jullundhar’. This city Jalandhar is said to have derived its name from a demon king named ‘Jalandhar’, who is mentioned in the Puranas and Mahabharta. In other hand, it means area inside the water lying between the two rivers Satluj and Beas. During the rule of the Katoch Dynasty, Jalandhar was also named as ‘Trigartta’ as it was surrounded by three rivers namely Satluj, Beas and Ravi. It has a great history comprises of three periods — ancient, medieval and modern. The present area of Jalandhar district was the part of the Indus Valley Civilization where tourist can find the remains of the Harappa and Mohenjo-Daro.   In modern time, was declared ‘Proclaimed Area’ under the Seditious Meetings Act. It is being named as ‘Smart City’ of India. Jalandhar is also a sports hub. Apart from this, tourism has lots to offer as a popular city. Some of the main attractions are - Imam Nasir Masjid, Tulsi Mandir, Shaheed-E-Azam Sardar Bhagat Singh Museum and others.

  • Imam Nasir Masjid, Jalandhar: Imam Nasir Masjid is one of the most important tourist places in Jalandhar. This mosque is about 800 years old mausoleum enshrines. It is a sacred Dargah and was believed to have been visited by the Sufi Saint Baba Farid. There are two mosques which are exemplary of the ancient architecture. One must visit this place while touring to Jalandhar.
  • Tulsi Mandir, Jalandhar: This is a popular temple dedicated to the wife named Vrinda of the demon king Jalandhara. Near this temple there is a tank believed to be an ancient pilgrimage place. It is said that Jalandhara used this tank for bathing. There is also a curve cave near the temple that is dedicated to the goddess Annapurna. With this there are also other shrines too.
  • Shaheed-E-Azam Sardar Bhagat Singh Museum, Jalandhar: This is an important museum inaugurated on the 23rd of March 1981. This museum marks the 50 years of the freedom fighter’s martyrdom. This museum consists of many antiquities that belong to the freedom fighters.
  • Pushpa Gujral Science City, Jalandhar: This is an important place named after Pushpa Gujral, the mother of former Indian Prime minister I.K. Gujral.  This science city is informative and an ancient city with a diverse culture where one can experience the authentic roots of Punjab.
