Kargil is a district in 08th Union Territory which falls in Ladakh region. Kargil is the entry point of the Ladakh region when accessing it via Kashmir route. Known for its scenic beauty Kargil is located at an elevation of 2676 meters from sea level. Kargil is located at 60 km from Drass which is one of the coldest places in India. Kargil is known for its monasteries some of them being Lamayuru Monastery, Mulbekh Monastery, Sani Monastery, Rangdum Monastery, Shargole Monastery etc. The region also has many valleys some of them being Nakpochu Valley, Karste Valley and Suru Valley.

Main Attractions
  • Suru Valley: Suru Valley is one of the major attraction of Kargil. It is it is one of the most beautiful tourist attraction of this region, especially during the spring when the entire valley spread over apple and the apricot trees. It extends from Kargil town to Penzi La Watershed from where the Suru River originates.  This amazing valley is surrounded by breathtaking snowcapped Himalayan mountain ranges.
  • Sani Monastery: The Sani Monastery located at close to the Sani Village. The monastery lies on the plain where the Stod Valley broadens into the central plain of Zanskar. It is the oldest religious site in the whole, which was established by Kanishka of Kushan Emperor, during the 1st century.
  • Zanskar Valley: Zanskar is another major attraction of Kargil. It is a tehsil of the Kargil district. It spread over an area of some 7,000 square kms, lies at the height of 3,500-7,000 meters. The major attraction is Pemsai – La, located at the height of about 14,436 ft above the sea level, which is a mountain pass in the Ladakh region. It offers the splendid view of lush green fiends, full of yellow spring flowers and as you climb higher, glaciers and sheer rage of snow coved mountain. Padum is the main town of Zanskar, which is the hub of trekking.
  • Shargole Monastery: Shargole Monastery is located at Shargole village which is 10 km away from Mulbekh, enroute on Kargil - Leh route at 34 kms from Kargil. The village is popular for the small old Ge-Lugs Pa Buddhist Monastery. The image of an Avalokiteswar, 3 icons of Tara Devi carved on wood by Tibetan artist’s lies in this Monastery.

  • By Road – Kargil is well connected by road to all major cities in India. One can hire privet taxi from Srinagar airport/ Jammi Tawi railway station to reach Kargil.
