Koraput is a town filled with natural resources and pristine scenic beauty located in the state of Odisha. It is nature’s most hidden treasure of the state situated at a height of 2,900 ft. above the sea level. Koraput as a tourist destination appears to have been forsaken by the Gods. But now tourism has reached to this untouched destination for its welfare. Koraput is surrounded by mountains, thick forests and waterfalls. The name after Koraput is still obscured. According to Mr. R.C.S.Bell the name Koraput has been derived from trees named nux-vomica and is called as ‘Kora-Putti’ or “the hamlet of the nux-vomica”. Secondly, it is said that the name of Koraput is corrupted form of ‘Karaka pentho’, where Karaka literally mans ‘hail-stone’. This district is a part of the tribal belt in southern Odisha and famous for Sabara Srikhetra, which is also known as Jagannath Temple. Some of the other major tourist places to visit in Koraput are – Gupteswar caves, Kolab Dam, Duduma Waterfall and others.

Jagannath Temple, Koraput: Jagannath Temple in Koraput is also known as Sabara Srikhetra. As it was built by the Sabaras (Tribes) of Koraput, the name of the temple got its name after him. This temple is similar to the original Jagannath temple in Puri. The environment is peaceful and many devotees visit this temple for worship.

Tribal Museum, Koraput: Tribal Museum of Koraput was established to preserve the cultural heritage of the local tribes and promote their arts, crafts, dances and music. There is a small zoo created as well. This museum also display a collection of stone sculptures, metal images and objects, terracotta, wooden objects, paintings etc. It is a must visiting place of Koraput.

Kolab Reservoir, Koraput: Kolab Reservoir is a beautiful picnic spot that is visited by the local people of Koraput. It is located about 73km away from Koraput. It provides some of the stunning views of the hills. Great place for day outings.
