Kottayam is a municipal town and one of the 14th districts of Kerala state. Kottayam derives its name from the word “Thaliyil Kottaya” where “kott” means “fort” and “akam” means “inside”. Literally it means being “the interior of a fort”. Kottayam is the main city of print media and literature and rightly known as “Akshara Nagari” that means “city of letters” or land of letters. This city was founded by the Rajah of Thekkumcoor. It came into limelight after it was declared as the first fully literate municipal town.  It is said that this was the first place where first English educational centre was established in South India. In 1820 AD., a Christian missionary named Benjamin Bailey established the first Malayalam printing press. Kottayam is an ancient city located near the hill station of Kottathavalam bordered by enchanting Western Ghats and mesmerizing Vembanad Lake.  This city is also called as Kunnumpuram. Kottayam is a popular tourist destination owing to its natural beauty with breathtaking landscape. It is crowned as an Eco City. Visitors are most welcomed to discover famous temples and shrines such as Subramanya Swami Temple, the Thirunakkara Mahadeva Temple, Pallippurathu Kavu, Thiruverpu Temple and the Saraswathy Temple and others.
