Kumarakom is the most fascinating paradise situated in the Kottayam district of Kerala. It is located on man-made land reclaimed from the vast Vembanad Lake, the largest lake in the state of Kerala and is home to many marine and freshwater fish. Kumarakom, the name has been derived from the words kuminja and akam that means the land formed by accumulation of sediments. It is also believed that the word Kumarakom came from Kumaran, a deity worshipped in the region’s temples. Before Marthanda Varma (the King of Travancore) conquered this region in 1750, it was once a part of the Vadakkancore kingdom. With the arrival of the English farmer Alfred George Baker in 1847, the modern history Kovalam started. It is an enchanting backwater destination that offers backwater cruises on the most renowned lake of Vembanad Lake in Kerala. It is home to a wide variety of tropical flora and fauna blessed with amazing beauty of nature. This beautiful and fertile land of Kumarakom draws several tourists from all over the world and gives the opportunity to enjoy the serenity and splendor of the famous backwater cruises. While taking a backwater cruise it provides a soothing vision to the eyes and also adds the perfect tropical touch to the landscape with large number of coconut trees, lined by lush and peaceful greenery.

  • Pathiramanal Island, Kumarakom: The name 'Pathiramanal' means 'Sands of night'. It is a small island on the backwaters of Alappuzha district of Kerala. It is home to many rare varieties of migratory birds from different parts of the world. The journey through Vembanad Lake is a marvellous experience.
