Leh is a district located in 08th Union Territory Ladakh. Leh was once capital of the Himalayan Kingdom of Ladakh, now it is one of the two districts that is in Ladakh region. Leh is second largest district in terms of area after Kutch in Gujarat and is spread over a vast area of 45,110 km2. Leh is located at an altitude of 3500 meters and is surrounded by towing mountains. Since it is covered from mountain to the south, the region is rain deficit thus making it a cold desert climate. Summers are short and cold while winters are long and freezing and temperature can drop to as low as -25 degrees Celsius. Historically Leh was an important stop on the old Silk Road and connected India with China and Tibet for ages. Leh attracts lot of tourist every year due to its magnificent beauty and is especially popular among bike riders. There are many places of attraction in around Ladakh some of them being Leh Palace, Hemis Gompa, Shanti Stupa, Stok Monastery, Zorawar Fort, Magnetic hill and Pangong Lake etc.

Main Attractions
  • Leh Palace: Leh Palace is one of the major attraction of Leh & Laddakh, which is situated at the old town sits in the shadow of a hill. It is 19 stories high Palace, which was built in 1553 AD and it was the one of the highest building of the world during that time. It was the residence of the royal families until 19th century when the forces of Dogra attached then the royal family was shifted to Stok palace.
  • Shanti Stupa: Santi stupa is one of the major attraction of Leh, which is located from 5kms away from the Leh.  It was built by Japanese Buddhist Bhikshu, Gyomyo Nakamura in 1991 and it was inaugurated by the 14th Dalai Lama. The Shanti Stupa carry the relics of the Buddha at its base. One can reach this place by driving or by climbing 500 steps from Leh city.
  • Hall of Fame Museum: Hall of Fame Museum is another popular attraction of Leh. It was built and maintained by the Indian Army. It offers the glimpse of rich history and culture along with flora and fauna of this region. It contains the various information on the various monarchs of Leh, battles they fought, is also on display. Apart from the history and culture, the museum is also home of the data about military ammunition used by the Indian army in its various battles with Pakistan is on display and has a display on the Siachen battlefield.
  • Shey Monastery: This monastery is one of the most popular tourist attraction of Leh and Ladakh region. The Monastery was established in 1655 within the Shey palace complex. It is located about 15kms away from Leh.  It was the residence of the former pre-Tibetan royal family. A 12-meter-high copper statue of Gautam Buddha is the major attraction of this monastery which is gold plated and covers three stories in the building.
  • Leh Market: It is great place to enjoy the shopping. The various souvenir shops and small Tibetan bazaars are situated within the market. The market is renowned for pashmina shawls, embroidered patches, prayer wheels. Here one can also enjoy the local cuisine of this region.
  • Spituk Monastery: Situated at about 8kms away from Leh Spituk Monastery is another popular attraction of this region. The Monastery was established by Od-de, the elder brother of Lha Lama Changchub Od in 11th century. Unlike other monasteries in Ladakh, Spituk monastery is also situated on a hill. River Indus flows behind the Monastery, surrounded by snowcapped mountains of the Himalayas.

Getting There
  • By Air – Leh has the airport, known as Kushok Bakula Rimpochee Airport, which is located at 5kms away from the heart of the town.  It is well connected by the major cities of India. 
  • By Railway – There are no railways in Leh, the nearest railway station is Jammu Tawi which is 706kms from Katra. Jammu Jawi railway station is well connected with all major cities of the India.
  • By Road – Lah is well connected by road to all major cities in India.
