Mandu, which is also called as Mandavgad is a ruined city that come under the Mandav area of the Dhar district, Madhya Pradesh. Mandu was a site of festivities under the Mughal rule with beautiful lakes and palaces. The word "Mandu" is believed to be a Prakrit corruption of "Mandapa Durga". The Mandu City is also known for its Afghan architecture. The grand palaces are still alive that speaks history of imperial conquests. It was a flourishing town in 6th century by the inscription dated 612 VS (555 CE). Visiting this place one can witness the romance between Prince Baz Bahadur and Rani Roopmati. Mandu was founded in the 11th century by Parmar rulers who used it as their fort capital. It is the city where love bloomed. There are several enchanting paintings that are depicted on the walls and caves of Mandu. There are attractive canals and artistically crafted pavilions. The Mandu fort is considered to be the biggest fort in India. Once it was the monsoon retreat of the Mughal emperors. Tourist visiting to Mandu can witness Mandu's long, rich and varied history.

Main Attractions
  • Roopmati's Pavilion, Mandu: Roopmati’s Pavilion is one of the most famous attraction in Mandu. The inscriptional evidence dates back to 555 AD. There are rock cut caves, namely, Lohani and Sat Kothari, are the earliest and rarer type of architecture amongst the over 60 structural monuments. It is located on the lofty hill to the south beyond the palace of Baz Bahadur stands. It is a major monument that visitor must visit.
  • Baz Bahadur's Palace, Mandu: Baz Bahadur’s Palace is another tourist attraction place Situated on the slope of a hill in the midst of a picturesque natural setting the main gateway of the palace. Tourist can also visit a beautiful garden, traces of which are still seen. It is open from the sunrise to the sunset.
  • Rewa Kund, Mandu: It is an artificial lake that was built by Baz Bahadur at Mandu. Presently this place is a holy spot covered by pilgrims during Narmada Parikrama.  The Rewa Kund is lined with masonry from which steps go down to the water level.  
  • Tomb of Hoshang Shah, Mandu: Hoshang Shah who was originally known as Alp Khan assumed the name Hoshang Shah, that means "Ruler of a good choice". He was appointed as Islamic king of the Malwa region. The tomb is the first marble structure of India famous for Afghan architectural style. The architecture of the dome is crowned with a crescent, a feature which seems to have been imported to Mandu direct from Mesopotamia or Persia.
  • Jama Masjid, Mandu: This Jama Masjid holds a prosperous history of the place and of the Islam in the by gone days. It was once a place for thousands of worshipers. The mosque was built by the rulers of Ghauri dynasty. It was started by Hoshang Shah and finished by Mahmud I in 1440 A.D.
