Mapusa is a small town in North Goa, which is situated about 13kms from the capital Panaji. It lies on the banks of Mapusa River, Mapusa is also considered to be the gateway of Goa. The town is also the commercial centre of Goa and known for its weekly Friday markets. Some of the major attractions of the town is Shrine Shree Dev Bodgeshwar Sansthan which is dedicated to Lord Bodgeshwar, Church of Our Lady of Miracles, Maruti Temple which devoted to lord Hanuman, Sri Kalika Temple, Church of St. Jerome etc.

Main Attractions
  • Church of Our Lady of Miracles: Earlier known for the annual festival of The Feast of Our Lady of Miracles. This church was built in 16th century. This church is also known as St. Jerome’s Church and was rebuilt in 1719 AD and again in 1838 AD.
  • Sri Kalika Temple: This is situated on the outskirts of the city. The main deity of the temple is Goddess Kali and is worshiped in the avatar of Mahamaya.
  • Maruti Temple: This temple is located on the top of Mount Altinho. This temple is dedicated to Lord Hanuman. The Lord is also known as Maruti and hence the temple derive its name.
  • Shree Dev Bodgeshwar Temple: Located at amidst lush green rice fields, the shrine of Bodgeshwar Baba. The dietry here is called ‘Angavani’ which means the one to whom the promises are made and who grants the wishes of his devotees.
  • Church of St. Jerome: It is one of the oldest church of this region, which believed to be around 407 years old. St. Jerome church is renowned for the 3 days long feast of Our Lady of Miracles that is held on the second Monday after Easter.

Getting There
  • By Train- Mapusa does not have a train station, and the nearest station is Margao, at a distance of 23 kms from Mapusa.
  • By Air- Goa's only airport is at Dabolim and has a number of domestic flights coming in from major Indian cities and chartered flights from European destinations.
  • By Road- Mapusa is 15 km from the capital, Panaji, a bus journey of 30 minutes. Mapusa is a convenient base for reaching the beaches of Anjuna, Calangute, Vagator, Chapora and Baga, and it is fairly close to Arambol and Margao.
