Historically Motihari has been important from Ancient times to Indian Independence Movement. Motihari dates back to Magadha Kingdom. Many kingdoms ruled over Motihari through its history most important being The Mauryas, The Sungas and The Kanvas. Motihari is important for Buddhist as it contains largest stupas in the world, Kesaria stupa, which was built by Ashoka the Great. During Independence Movement the region saw first Satyagrah by Mahatma Gandhi, famously known as Champaran Satyagrah. The movement was against forced cultivation of indigo and opium by the British Raj.
