Motihari is northen town in Bihar, which forms border with Nepal. Motihari is the headquarters of East Champaran district. Historically Motihari has been important from Ancient times to Indian Independence Movement. Motihari dates back to Magadha Kingdom. Many kingdoms ruled over Motihari through its history most important being The Mauryas, The Sungas and The Kanvas. Motihari is important for Buddhist as it contains largest stupas in the world, Kesaria stupa, which was built by Ashoka the Great. During Independence Movement the region saw first Satyagrah by Mahatma Gandhi, famously known as Champaran Satyagrah. The movement was against forced cultivation of indigo and opium by the British Raj.

  • Gandhi Smarak, Motihari: The memorial foundation stone was laid in 1972 to Honour nationalism. Mr. Vidyakar Kavi, a Gandhian, dedicated it to the nation. This memorial pillar commemorates the memory of Champaran Satyagrah of Mahatma Gandhi who spearheaded the voice against the atrocities of the British Indigo planters against poor peasants of Champaran.
  • Moti Jheel, Motihari: It is a historical canal located in the heart of the city of Motihari. It is the most famous tourist attraction Motihari and is popular among visitor touring Bihar on a regular basis. Here you can do various activities such as boating from a major part of tourist engagement.
  • Chakia, Motihari: It is a key commercial town and a Nagar Panchayat in Purvi Champaran district of Bihar. The railway station is called Chakia and is the closest railway station to Kesaria Stupa, a celebrated Buddhist pilgrimage site of the region.
