Officially known as Udagamandalam, this Queen of Hill Stations was originally occupied by the Todas. It is located 80 km north of Coimbatore and is the capital of the Nilgiris district. It is a popular hill station located in the Nilgiri Hills. It came under the rule of the East India Company at the end of the 18th century. The main source of income is based on tourism and agriculture, along with the manufacture of medicines and photographic film. Nilgiri Ghat roads and Nilgiri Mountain Railway is the main link with the town. Its natural environment attracts tourists and it is a popular summer destination. As of 2011, the town had a population of 88,430.

Main Attractions
  • Rose Garden: Situated at a height of 2000 metres it is one of the largest of its type in the country. It is spread over an area of 4 hectares and is managed by the Tamil Nadu horticulture department. It is also recipient of famous Garden of Excellence award.
  • Nilgiri Mountain Railway: Located at a height of 2000 feet it was built by the British in 19th century.  Originally used by Madras Railway, it is often called the Queen of Railway Stations. The train is a charming locomotive with wooden coaches draped in exotic unconventional colours.
  • Ooty Golf Course: This Golf course is one of its kind as it is located 7000 feet above sea level. This is an eighteen-hole golf course with many changes in elevation. It is recommended that you play only nine holes as the rest could prove to be an arduous task.
  • Mudumalai National Park: ThisThis national park is located on the surrounding of three Indian states namely Tamil Nadu, Kerala, and Karnataka. It is in the Western Ghats and is one of the most popular places to visit in Ooty.
