Palakkad is a municipality city and one of the 14 districts of Kerala in South India. During the British rule, Palakkad was known as Palghat. Earlier Palakkad was also known as Palakkattussery that is now the seventh most populous town in Kerala. Palakkad is the gateway to Kerala from the north situated at the foot of the Western Ghats. In the early time, most parts of Kerala along with Palakkad were under the rule of the Chera Kings, who were believed to be the branch of Zamorians of Calicut. It is said that the name Palakkad came from many origin and has become a matter of choice. During the Sangam period the land got its name from “Pala” means barren and “kadu” means jungle, a fusion of two Malayalam words. But it is supposed to have derived its name from the “Pala tree” which means Alsteria Scholaris and “kadu” means forest. There are a number of rivers which are tributaries of the Bharathapuzha River. Palakkad is the dreamy land of misty monuments that has vast stretches of lush green paddy fields. It is also known as the ‘Granary of Kerala’. It offers many tourist attractions that consist of valleys, hillocks, rivers, forests, mountain streams, dams, historical monuments, ancient temples and traditional Ayurvedic treatment centers. This place is blessed with the nature bounty of virgin and green Nelliampathy hills, Silent Valley National Park, Attappady hills and others.

Main Attractions
  • Palakkad Fort, Palakkad:  Palakkad Fort is one of the most beautiful preserved forts in Kerala. In 1766, this fort was constructed by Hyder Ali of Mysore and his son Tipu Sultan. This fort is also known as Tipu’s Fort.  The fort was remodified by the British East India Company in the year 1790. It is a protected fort by the Archeological Survey of India.
  • Malambuzha, Palakkad: Malampuzha Garden is also known as the Vrindavan of Kerala.  There are lush green lawns, Innumerable flower beds glittering pools, fountains and avenues. It is one of the most visiting tourist attraction which await the pleasure and delight of children. There is a water reservoir ideal place for boating and fishing.
  • Silent Valley National Park: Silent Valley National park is another tourist attraction place located in the Nilgiri Hills, within the Palakkad District of Kerala. This region was explored in 1847 by the botanist Robert Wight. This national Park is a part of The Nilgiri Sub-Cluster and Western Ghats. In 2007, it was recognized as World Heritage Site by UNESCO.
  • Parambikulam Wildlife Sanctuary: Parambikulam Wildlife Sanctuary is a land of dense vegetation. This wildlife is reserved for Tigers and was declared as Tiger Reserve during 2009 It one of the most attractive places in the entire stretch of Western Ghats. Tourist can go for jungle safaris and get the opportunity to explore some rare species inside the sanctuary.
  • Kalpathy Temple:   Kalpathy is also known as Sri Visalakshi Sametha Sri Viswanathaswamy temple. It is popularly called as Kasi Viswanathaswamy Temple or locally as Kundukovil. This temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva that was erected in the 15th century. Ratholsavam is one of the biggest festival that is celebrated by the people of Palakkad held in the month of November and continue for seven days.  
  • Jainimedu Jain Temple: It is a famous Jain Temple that is located at Jainimedu. It is a 15th-century Jain temple. This temple has been built about 500 years ago, by Jain head, Inchanna Satur, for the jain sage Chandranathaswamy. It was built for the community of 400 Jain families who are still residing in Palakkad.
