Palitana is considered as the major pilgrimage centre by the Jain community. This place comes under Bhavnagar district of Gujarat. This city is also known as “City of Temples” as there are cluster of approx.863 hundreds marble-carved temples built by generation of Jains from the 11 century onwards. Beside this there are approx. 2700 monuments. Palitana is the only place where there are more than 900 temples all over the world. Shatrunjaya hill is the main tourist attraction of many devotees. Literally it means a place of victory against inner enemies. It is said that Adinath, meditated on the Shatrunjaya hill who was the first of the Jain tirthankaras. It is surrounded with spectacular viewpoints such as temple sites, beautiful beaches, wildlife and other local sightseeing. There is a saying ‘‘Structure of Ranakpur, Art of Abu, Height of Taranga, and greatness of Palitana are incomparable”. As it is an immense tourist place, it attracts both Indian Nationals and Foreigners alike.

Main Attractions
  • Shatrunjaya Temple, Palitana: The Shatrunjaya Temple is the most sacred temple of the Jains and one of the largest of its kind in India. It is a pilgrimage place and one of the most popular among Jain community. It is one of the largest temple complexes where there are more than 900 Jain temples in the world. To reach the temple one has to climb 3500 stairs. Tourist should wear decent cloths. Shorts, or sleeveless tops or shirts are strictly prohibited. Special permission needs to be taken from the temple authorities for photography.
  • Angar Pir, Palitana: Angar Pir is a muslim shrine dedicated to Angar Pirbaba, a Sufi saint from the 14th century. It is located next to the Adishvar Temple on top of Shatrunjay Hill. It is believed that Childless women come here for blessings and their prayers are granted.
  • The Chaumukh Temple, Palitana: This temple was built in the year 1618 that is considered to be the holiest of the all temple. The meaning of this temple - ‘Chau’ means four and ‘Mukh’ means face. The name is derived from the idols of Lord Adinath, who was the first of the Jain tirthankaras.
  • Kumar Pal Temple, Palitana: Among the 863 dotting Shatrunjay Hill, Kumar pal temple is one of the most important temples in Palitana. It is believed to be one of the oldest temples on the hill. It is said that Kumar Pal was the grandson and chief disciple of the first Tirthankara Adinath Rishabdev. Maximum devotees come here seeking blessings and spiritual enlightenment.
  • Shri Vishal Jain Museum, Palitana: This museum is located at the base of Shatrunjay Hill. The museum has an extensive collection of artifacts and relics pertaining to the Jain faith. It also exhibits the life of Lord Mahavira charting the history of Jainism. It stays open every day from 11am-3pm and 4pm-6pm.
