Panna is a small town in the north-eastern part of Madhya Pradesh. Originally settled and inhabited by Gond tribe in 13th century, Panna is famous for its meadows and forests and a diamond mine. The dwelling is also called Muktidham or Padmavatipuri Dham because it is the seat of salvation of holy man Mahamati Prannath who while travelling with his disciples reached this desert island and settled here to spread his message of awakening a being’s soul. He stayed at this hamlet town for eleven years until his death in 17th century. 

Main Attractions
  • Panna Tiger Reserve: Spread in an area of 542.67 kilometer and two districts Panna and Chhatarpur, Panna National Park was declared a tiger reserve in 1994. Other than tigers, there exits leopard, chital, chinkara, nilgai, sambhar and sloth bear and around 200 species of birds like bar-headed goose, honey buzzard, king vulture, blossom-headed parakeet, Changeable hawk-eagle and Indian vulture.
  • Pandava Falls and Caves:  The legend has it that Pandavas [from Mahabharta] spend a part of their exile in these caves. The caves are around a 30 feet high fall on a tributary of Ken River. In the surroundings is a bowl shaped valley and an emerald colored lake.
  • Diamond Mines: Also called the treasure land, the diamond mines of Panna are the only active and biggest mines in Asia. The mine area spread in a belt of 80 kilometers goes by the name of Majhagaon. The mine does and has not produced any large rocks but only small stones and the process for extracting the diamonds is the same as followed in Australia.
  • Mahamati Prannathji Temple: It is the very place where sage Mahamati Prannath took Samadhi or attained salvation inside one of the domes of temple which was built in 1672 in a lotus style formation. The structure and design of the temple in inspired by Hindu and Muslim architectures and is divided into six parts, of which the most spectacular id Shri Gummatji – a building with nine domes in marble and circular in shape where eight domes are representatives of eight directions and the ninth and central one has a divine golden kalash. Every year on the auspicious day of Sharada Purnima the temple is visited by thousands of devotees.
