Patiala is a popular district in the state of Punjab. Patiala has a rich cultural heritage without this, visit to Patiala is incomplete. After freedom, it has emerged as a major educational centre of Punjab. Patiala is the fourth largest city in the state of Punjab located around the Qila Mubarak (the Fortunate Castle). In 1763, this beautiful city was established by Baba Ala Singh, a Jat Sikh chieftain after the construction of Qila Mubarak. Patiala, literally meant as the land of Baba Ala Singh from the Sidhu Dynasty. As the city has a popular printing press of Nawal Kishore founded in the 19th century, this city is well-known as the “City of Newspapers”. After freedom Patiala has also emerged as a major educational centre of Punjab. The city also holds many historical monuments, palaces, religious shrines and other local sightseeing. This is the place where you can experience the fine blend of Mughal, Rajput and Punjabi culture and famous for its rich Mughal and Rajput architecture. It is also famous for ‘Patiala peg’ too. Dotted with glittering restaurants and Dhabas famous for local Punjabi cuisine, full of rich and spicy delicacies. 

Main Attractions
  • Gurdwara Dukh Niwaran Sahib, Patiala: It is one of the most famous Gurudwara in Patiala.  Devotees visiting the shrine have great faith in the healing qualities of the water in the sacred tank (Sarovar) by the gurdwara. It is believed that the healing qualities of water can cure any illness. It is a must visit place while taking tour to Patiala.
  • Bahadurgarh Fort, Patiala: Bahadurgarh Fort is an ancient fort which is constructed by Nawab Saif Khan in 1658 A.D. Later this was renovated in 1837 by a Sikh ruler Maharaja Karam Singh. The name Bahadurgarh fort was given by Maharaja Karam Singh as a tribute to the Sikh Guru Teg Bahadur. This fort also consists of a historical Gurdwara Sahib (a Sikh temple).
  • Maa Kali Devi Mandir, Patiala: It is a Hindu temple situated opposite Baradari garden on the Mall Road of Patiala City (Punjab).  This temple is dedicated to Maa Kaali built by the Sikh ruler of the Patiala State, Maharaja Bhupinder Singh. Because of the temple’s beautiful structure, it has been declared a national monument. Thousands of devotees come here to worship by offering mustard oil, sweets, coconuts, bangles and chunnis and others.
  • Qila Mubarak Complex, Patiala: It is a must visit place of Patiala. Qila Mubarak Complex is the heart of the city that attracts many visitors and tourists. It contains the main palace or Qila Androon. Literally, it means ‘inner fort’. The architectural style of the palace is a synthesis of late Mughal and Rajasthani. Baba Ala Singh, a Jat Sikh chieftain constructed this Qila Mubarak.
  • Sheesh Mahal, Patiala: Sheesh Mahal was built by the Maharajas Narinder Singh in 1847 during 19th century. Literally the name of this palace means the Palace of Mirrors. There are large number of frescoes, most of which were made under His Highness Maharaja Narinder Singh. The main attraction of this mahal is the lake.
  • Baradari Gardens, Patiala: Baradari is another beautiful tourist place in Patiala. This garden is situated in the north of the old Patiala city, just outside the Sheranwala Gate. It is a perfect place for nature lovers built around the Baradari Palace of the then crown Prince Rajinder Singh. Main attractions of this place are - huge fruit trees, the Fern House and the Rock Garden.
