Raipur is the largest city and the capital of Chhattisgarh. Formerly it was the part of Madhya Pradesh until 1 November 2000, when the state of Chhattisgarh was formed. Raipur is one of the major industrial center and one of the largest steel markets in India. The city is also renowned for various other industries such as coal, power plants etc. Raipur is also known as the Rice Bowl of Chhattisgarh. It is known as one of the most historical and cultural city, which is dated back to 9th century. Raipur was once part of Dakshina Kosala Kingdom followed by Mauryan Empire. It later became capital of Haihaya Dynasty under Kalchuri Kings. The city later fell into the hands of Satawahana Kings who ruled till 2nd-3rd Century AD. Raipur is an emerging tourist destination of India, which offers several tourist attractions such as Mahant Ghasidas Memorial Museum, Burha Talab, Mahamaya Temple etc.

Main Attractions
  • Hajra, Raipur: It has 46 meters high falls that is situated among dense forests, hilla, and tunnels. It is in Dongargarh, the area is a popular picnic spot.
  • Burha Talab, Raipur: It is situated n ‘Purani Basti’ Named by the combination of two word ‘Burha’ means Old and ‘Talab’ means Pond, it is the largest lake in the city. In the middle of the lake is an Island that is covered with Green Trees and Gardens. The lake is also popular for its musical fountain.
  • Mahamaya Temple, Raipur: The temple is located at the old fort area of the city. This ancient 11th century temple lying on the banks of River Khaaroon belongs to the Kalchuri era. The temple is dedicated to Devi Durga possessing all the good qualities and the power of Lord Vishnu and Lord Shiva.
  • Mahant Ghasi Das Memorial Museum: It is one of the major attraction of the town, which was established by Raja Mahant Ghasidas of Rajnandgaon in 1875. It is the home to a collection of historical significance to the region such as inscriptions, images, coins, sculptures. Collections of the museum are displayed on two floors and in 5 galleries.
  • Maharajabandh Lake: It was established in 1770 by Maharaja Roadani. The north side of the lake lie ruins of a mediaeval fort. King Ram Chandra, the founder of Raipur had initiated the construction of the fort during his reign.
  • Purkhauti Muktangan Museum: Founded under development by the Government of Chhattisgarh, Culture Department under Ministry of Tourism. The Museum is spread over 18 hectares exhibiting entire natural resources with existing infrastructures, industries etc.
  • MM Funcity: It is a water cum amusement park in the eastern outskirts of the city.
  • Water World Resort: It is a water park on the banks of River Kharoon in the south-western part of the city.
