Rupnagar is of considerable antiquity because of historical background. It lies on the bank of Satluj River and Shivalik hill range of the Lower Himalayas. In the 11th century, this town is said to have been founded by a Raja called Rokeshar, who was a then ruler. Rupnagar is also spelled Ropar or Rupar. This town was named after the son of Rokeshwar named Rup Sen. This town dates to the Indus Valley Civilization. After many excavation, Rupnagar indicate that the first civilized folk to settle here were the Harappans. Punjab won the National Tourism Award for Rural Tourism in 2011. Rupnagar town can be the best example for rural tourism in Punjab as it has excellent potential for sustainable rural tourism experiences of visitors with local visitors. It is well-known for fish farm and migratory birds from Central Asia. The city has one of the three important wetlands of the Punjab State known as Ropar Wetland. Rupnagar has many historical and religious places such as - Archaeological Museum of ASI, Jateshwar Mahadev Temple, Bhhatha Sahib, Tibbi Sahib, Anand Pur Sahib and Sadabarat Sahib and so on.

The Archaeological Museum of ASI, Rupnagar: It is one of the most important museum in the city of Rupnagar, located on the banks of the Sutlej. This museum includes some Harappan remains such as Harappan antiquities, including jewellery beads, metallic implements, pottery, wheeled toys etc. The artefacts from the Shakya, Kushana and Gupta periods are displayed at the museum after excavations.

Bhakra Nangal Dam, Rupnagar: It is another tourist attraction in Rupnagar and one of the highest straight gravity concrete dams in the world. This dam was constructed in 1955. Near the dam there is a beautiful lake 'Gobind Sagar' named after Guru Gobind Singh. It is one of the most interesting place to visit while touring to Rupnagar in Punjab.

Gurudwara Parivar Vichhora Sahib, Rupnagar: This gurudwara is located at the hill top where one must climb 100 odd steps to reach this holy spot. This magnificent gurudwara was built by grateful devotees of Guru Gobind Singh Ji. The construction of the gurudwara was started in 1963 and completed in 1975. The Gurdwara Sahib signifies the tragic happenings that followed the evacuation of Anandpur by Guru Gobind Singh Ji. A big fair is held here annually in the month of December.

Jateshwar Mahadev Temple, Rupnagar: It is an ancient temple that is dedicated to Lord Shiva, located in Jateshwar. This temple was built by one Jai Dayal Sharma. Devotees comes here to visit the temple during Shivratri festival. Glimpses of the older temple can be seen in the remains of four carved sandstone pillars, possibly from the 10th or 11th centuries.
