Sambalpur is a prime tourist destination place situated at the state of Odisha. In ancient time, it was a favorite place for many scholars, geographer and numerous foreign tourist who mentioned this place as one of the most essence places in India. This town has got many names. It was named as ‘Hirakhand’ from ancient time. Then it was named as ‘Sambalk’ by Ptolemy. Later, it was named as Sambalpur. The name of this town Sambalpur has been derived from Samalai, the presiding Goddess whose image was founded by the first Chauhan Raja of Sambalpur named as Balaram Dev. This town is depicted in a famous book named, “Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire” written by Edward Gibbnon. He wrote that “Sumelpur” which is now Sambalpur in Odisha was a diamond trading center and was being supplied to Rome. Though it was famous for an ancient center of diamond trade, it is also popular for its tie and dye textiles. It is also popular as Sambalpuri. Sambalpur is also well-known for the longest dam of the world across the great river Mahanadi. In other hand, Sambalpur is also a land of temples which are the influence of Vaishnava tradition in Sambalpur. The Samalai Temple which is the oldest temple in Sambalpur that represents the finest Chauhan style of circumvallation. For this reason, the region is popular for many devotees and emerging as one of the most famous pilgrimage place.

  • Samaleswari Temple, Sambalpur: Samaleshwari Temple is also known as Samalai Temple dedicated to the goddess known as ‘Maa’. The town Sambalpur, which was known as Hirakhanda in ancient time and got its name from this existing temple. It is a Hindu temple in Sambalpur situated on the bank of the river Mahanadi.
  • Hirakud Dam, Sambalpur: It is one of the longest earthen dams of the world which is of about 16 miles, around 26km in length, built on the River Mahanadi. It is also considered as the biggest artificial lake in Asia. This Dam was built in the year 1957. Main purpose of this dam is to control floods and it relieves the situations of drought.
