Srinagar is the largest city in the state of Jammu and Kashmir and is the summer capital of the state. Situated on the banks of Jhelum, the city is world famous for its gardens, lakes, house boats and dried fruits. The region has been populated since prehistoric times which is evident from archaeological find in Burzahom. There are some references which tells the city may have been founded in 1182 BCE by a king named Ashok (not the same Ashok of Mauryan Empire), however some date it to sixth century CE. The city is located at an elevation of about 1500 meters and has humid subtropical climate and is much cooler as compared to other parts south to it. The city is famous for its lake and swaps which is spread out all over the city. Some of the most famous ones are Dal Lake, the Nigeen, the Anchar, Khushal Sar, Gil Sar and Hokersar. While Dal Lake is famous for its house boats, Hokersar is a swap that attracts of thousands of migratory birds from colder climates like Sibera and Central Asia during winters. Kashmir is often referred as Venice of the East due to many boats which are not only used for travel but also holds various markets. Srinagar is also known for Mughal Gardens and there are more than one in and around the city namely Chashma Shahi; Pari Mahal; Nishat Bagh; Shalimar Bagh; and the Naseem Bagh. Some other places of interest in Srinagar are Shankaracharya Temple, which dates to 200 BC, Kheer Bhawani Temple, Sri Pratap Singh Museum, Shankaracharya Temple and Jamia Mosque.

Main Attractions
  • Dal Lake:- It is one of the major tourist attraction of the Srinagar. The Dal Lake is renowned for its beautiful houseboats and Shikaras. It is the second largest in the state, which stretch from Dal gate to Nehru Park. You can take a Shikara ride to Nehru Park, an island on the Dal Lake with a café, speed boats and other water sports activities such as water skiing and surfing etc.
  • Nishat Bagh:- Located on the eastern side of the Dal Lake, Nishat Bagh is one of the most popular attraction of Srinagar. The Nishat Bagh was founded in 1633 by Abdul Hasan Asaf Khan. It is known as one of the largest Garden made during the Mughal era. It is surrounded by mountains, built over 12 terraces levels, rich with chinars and cypresses and the some of the rare species of the blossoms. The garden offers the breath-taking view of the lake beneath the snow-capped Pir Panjal mountain range.
  • Indira Gandhi Tulip Garden:- It is one of the major attraction of Srinagar. Indira Gandhi Tulip Garden is located near to the Dal Lake, on the foothill of Zabarwan Mountains. It is one of largest tulip garden of Asia, which is spread over 90 acres which is houses over 70 varieties of colored tulip flowers. An annual Tulip festival is organized here during the month of April.
  • Nagin Lake:- Nagin Lake is another major attraction of Srinagar, which is also known as “Jewel in the Ring”. It is a mildly eutrophic lake, considered as a part of the Dal Lake and it is connected to the Dal Lake via a narrow strait. A ride on the Jhelum River from Zero Bridge one of the popular attraction which gives offers the splendid view of the surviving riverfront mansions along with historic wooden Kadals (bridges). The water of this Lake is much clear then Dal Lake.
  • Shalimar Bagh:- Shalimar Bagh is a Mughal Garden located in Srinagar northeast of the Dal Lake. This bag was built by Mughal Emperor Jahangir for his wife Noor Jahan in 1619. Although the history of Shalimar Bagh predates the Mughals and as per some references it existed during the reign of Vakataka dynasty which ruled the region during 2nd Century by its king Pravarsena II. 
  • Sri Pratap Singh Museum:- Sri Pratap Singh Museum was established in 1898, housing various rare terracotta heads of 3rd century and also large range of terracotta plaques dated back to 4th to 5th century.  Along with this it displays a green stone figure of Lord Vishnu sitting on a Garuda, ancient brass model of Lokeshvara, 5th century copper image of Buddha designed in Gandhar style. 
  • Shankaracharya Temple:- Shankaracharya Temple is situated on the top of Shankaracharya Hill, which is equally sacred shrine for Hindus and Buddhist religion. It believed that the temple was visited by Adi Shankara. The temple was probably established by Jaluka, the son of Emperor Ashoka at around 200 BC and the present structure probably dates back to the 9th century AD. It is located at an elevation of 1,000 feet, which offers the spectacular view of Pir Panjal mountain range. 
  • Hazratbal Mosque:- Hazratbal Mosque is one of the holiest place for Muslims. The Mosque is located on Dal Lake and is brilliant example of Mughal and Kashmiri architecture. This is the one of the most famous mosque of Srinagar, situated on the left bank of the Dal Lake.
  • Jama Masjid:- It is the oldest mosque in Srinagar which was built in 1674, The Jamia Masjid of Srinagar is located at Nowhatta, in the middle of the old city. It has 370 pillars, four spires tower, and prayer halls. It is also known as the Friday Mosque. The Mosque was established in 1394 by Sultan Sikandar shah kashmiri shahmiri.

Getting There
  • By Air – Srinagar airport, known as Sheikh ul Alam Airport, which is located at 14kms away from the heart of the city.  It is well connected by the major cities of India. 
  • By Road – Srinagar is well connected via National Highway 1-A which connects Jammu to Srinagar. The Jawahar Tunnel is used to connect Kashmir Valley with Jammu.
