Located on the banks of the great Brahmaputra River, Tezpur is one of the largest towns in Northern Assam. Tezpur is located about 170 km from Guwahati which is sometimes referred as cultural capital of Assam. Tezpur is known for its cleanliness and attracts a lot of tourists who are interested in clean and green view of the city.  History of Tezpur dates back to 4th Century AD. As per mythological references Tezpur name is derived from Sanskrit words 'teza' (meaning blood) and 'pura' (meaning town or city), due to a battle fought by Banasur, who was kings of Asura.  It has given immense contribution in the field of art, literature and culture in the history of Assam as it has been hometown of greats like Dr. Bhupen Hazarika, Jyoti Prasad Agarwala, Kalaguru Bishnu Prasad Rabha and Phani Sarma. The city is known for its innate picturesque serene beauty. Tezpur is known for Kalia Bhomora Setu, Bura-Chapori Wildlife Sanctuary and Nameri National Park etc. 

Main Attractions
  • Agnigarh, Tezpur: The site illustrates the romance between Prince Aniruddha and Princess Usha and the fierce battle that was fought later by Lord Krishna and Banasura. The place is a towering mass of land – a hillock – that can be climbed by a circular stairway that goes round Agnigarh.
  • Bhairabi Temple, Tezpur: Is situated in the outskirts of Tezpur, the temple overlooks the majestic Kolia Bhomora Bridge running across the River Brahmaputra. The Bhairabi Temple is located close to the ruins of the Bamuni Hills. It is believed that Princess Usha, the daughter of Banasura used to regularly come here to pray to Goddess Durga. This signifies that the temple is very old.
  • Cole Park, Tezpur: It is also known as the Chitralekha Park, There is a large, horse-shoe shaped lake in the middle of the park. The large grounds spreading across the lake is picturesque to say the leaset.
  • Kolia Bhomora Setu, Tezpur: This is the bridge that connects the Nagaon District with the Sonitpur District. The construction of this bridge marked the beginning of the development in the north eastern states. The bridge is named after the famous Ahom General Kolia Bhomora Phukan.
  • Mahabhairav Temple, Tezpur: It is situated on the northern fringes of the city, the Mahabhairav Temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva. Legend has it that originally Banasura, the demon king had built the temple. Is standing on top of a small hillock, the Temple has the idols of Lord Ganesha and Lord Hanuman on both sides of the entrance.
  • Da Parbatia, Tezpur: The site is protected by the Archaeological Survey of India as it is considered a heritage in its own right. Being one of the oldest surviving sculptural specimens of Assam, it is highly regarded in the state. There are figures of Goddess Ganga and Yamuna at the doorways of the temple.
  • Hazara Pukhuri, Tezpur: It is the third largest water reservoir or tank in the city of Tezpur. While the River Brahmaputra brings respite from the summers by carrying the cool winds, the pukhuris or ponds within the city add to the cool ambience. Its huge size only makes things more beautiful and charming for the residents of this city.
  • Ketakeshwar Dewal, Tezpur: It is a popular religious destination of the city the Ketakeshwar Dewal has one of the largest Shiva Lingams in the world. Visitors can freely visit the temple as it is opened all year round. Currently the temple is managed by a local committee.
  • Bamuni Pahar, Tezpur: It is located a few kilometers away from Tezpur. There are a few ruined walls around the hill which have been carved out with stone. These stone carvings are known for their creative refinement.
  • Rudrapadh, Tezpur: It is situated on the banks of the Brahmaputra River. Dedicated to Lord Shiva, it is believed that Lord Shiva’s left foot’s impression is imprinted on the premises of the temple. The Maha Shivratri is one of the main festivals celebrated in the Rudrapada Temple.
  • Padum Pukhuri, Tezpur: The Island is accessible only through a small iron bridge. The Padum Pukhuri is a common attraction for children. The main attractions of Padum Pukhuri are boating and the toy train ride for the children. There is also a musical fountain on the island that is played every evening.
  • Nag Shankar Temple, Tezpur: It is close to the town of Tezpur at Jamuguri lies the Nag Shankar Temple. There is a large pond adjoining the temple structure. In the pond, several varieties of soft-shell turtles can be found. Fishes are also commonly found in this pond.

  • By Air - Nearest airport is the Saloni airport (10km). It has flights to Guwahati. Nearest airport is Guwahati. Guwahati is connected to other Indian cities.
  • By Railway - Nearest railway station is Rangapara North Railway Station. The Lakhimpur – Misamari railway line connects this station with Tezpur station. Other nearest railway station is the Guwahati railway station is connected to rest of India.
  • By Road – The Assam State Transport Corporation has buses which connect Tezpur by road. Private buses also operate. Jorhat, Dimapur, Shillong, Guwahati, Tinsukia are cities which can be accessed from Tezpur.
