Varanasi is one of the most important pilgrimage place in the state of Uttar Pradesh. It is also known as Banaras or Kashi. The name Varanasi has been derived from two small streams that flow into the river Ganges, Varana on its northern border and Asi (or Assi) on its southern border. Varanasi is the city of ethereal holiness and sanctity. This holy city is also titled as ‘Spiritual city of India’ and ‘City of Temples’. It is the oldest living city of the world. It is the birth place of twenty - third Tirthankara, Parsvanath. It is the land of Moksh as it is believed that the person who takes his last breath here will surely attain salvation.  It has the highest number of river banks in the world. Total number of ghats are 84.  It is also considered as “Mahashamshana” or “the great cremation ground”. It has been a sacred place since ancient times which is mentioned in the puranas, the two Hindu epics – Ramayana and Mahabharata. The city has witnessed many important events and movements of Hindu religion and Indian civilization. There are many temples and holy ghats where devotees can experience the evening aarti at Ganga ghats.

  • New Vishwanath Temple, Varanasi: It is situated at the premises of Banaras Hindu University. It is one of the major tourist attraction in Varanasi.  This temple was constructed by the famed Birla family.  
  • Kashi Vishwanath Mandir, Varanasi: It is popularly known as the Golden temple due to the gold plating done on its 15.5 meter high spire. It is one of the 12 jyotirlingas located near the banks of river Ganga. It is one of the oldest temple in India.
  • Tulsi Manas Temple, Varanasi: Tulsi Manas Temple is one of the most beautiful temple of the city Varanasi. The deity of this temple is mainly dedicated to Lord Rama and Sita. It is a white-marble temple that has its walls covered with the text from Tulsi Das written Ramcharitramanas.
  • Bharat Mata Temple, Varanasi: The temple is situated in Mahatma Gandhi Kashi Vidyapeeth Campus inaugurated by Mahatma Gandhi in 1936. This temple is dedicated to Bharat Mata or Mother India inspired by the soldiers who fought for the war of Independence.
  • Bharat Kala Bhawan, Varanasi: It is a museum consist of nice collection of Scriptures, paintings, sculptures, archaeological materials. There are many rare antiques which cannot be seen in any other place in India.
  • Ramnagar Fort, Varanasi: It is another tourist place in Varanasi. It is a beautiful place to watch the sun set over the river. It was built in the eighteenth century and is the home of the king of Kashi. It is located near the Ganga River on its eastern bank opposite to the Tulsi ghat.
  • Sarnath, Varanasi: Sarnath is a Buddhist Pilgrimage centre located 13 kilometres north-east of Varanasi. There is a deer park where Gautama Buddha first taught the Dharma. According to history, Sarnath has been variously known as Mrigadava, Migad?ya, Rishipattana and Isipatana. The area is a treasure trove of archaeological findings such as Dharmrajika Stupa and Mulgandhkuti Vihar
