Varkala is a fascinating and alluring tourist destination place that is located 50km away from north-west of Thiruvananthapuram. It is situated at the South Indian state of Kerala. There are several stories and legends related to the birth of this place. Many historical documents say that it was well-known to ancient foreign traders. Varkala was best described as navigation and trading centers according to an ancient Greek manuscript. Varkala is both temple and coastal town. It is the home of the popular Papanasam Beach where fascinating stretch of cliffs are found adjacent to the Arabian Sea in southern Kerala. This place has become a place of pilgrimage centre for devotee because of the Samadhi of Kerala’s Saint Sree Narayana Guru is situated in this town. It is one of the best beach towns where tourist can mellow and relaxed; swim and sleep and chill out. As many people preferred this destination to be a new hang out place, Varkala Beach is getting developed for tourists. From December to till March, tourist can experience the biggest rush from all over India. Beside this town is also home to ancient Janardhana Swamy Temple. Owing to the presence of ancient Janardhana Swami temple, Varkala was known as the Southern Varanasi or Thenkasi. In fact, the place was also called Udaya Marthandapuram during the king of Travancore in 1762 built rows of houses in the obscure sea side village of Varkala in order to make the local Brahmins settle here. Varkala offers an excellent beach sightseeing with pilgrimage tour to every tourist.

  • Janardana Swami Temple: Janardana Swami Temple is a 2000-year-old temple situated in Varkala.  It is also known as Varkala Temple. This temple is dedicated to Janardana Swami,who is a form of Lord Vishnu. The structure of the temple date back to the 12th century. It is a sacred pilgrimage center for Hindus. Devotees visiting to Kanyakumari also visit this temple also. 
  • Varkala Papanasam Beach: It is one of the top tourist destinations located in the outskirts of Thiruvananthapuram district. It can be reached within an hour's drive from Thiruvananthapuram international airport that lies around 51 km away or from Kollam Town railway station that is around 37 km away002E
  • Varkala is a calm and quiet spot in the capital district of Kerala. This small but fast developing  town has various attractions to persuade the tourists. Varkala beach (it is also called Papanasam Beach), Varkala Sivagiri Mutt, Vishnu Temple that is over 2000 years old), etc. are a few of them.
  • Varkala beach that lies almost 10-km away from Varkala town, is believed to have medicinal and curative properties in its water.  Thus the faithful believe that a bath in this water would cleanse the body and soul from all impurities and sins. Thus the beach is popularly called in native Malayalam language 'Papanasam' (combined form of two words 'papam' means sin and 'nasam' means destruction.)
  • Janardhanaswamy Temple which is over 2000 years old is one of the major tourist interests in Varkala. The Sivagiri Mutt, founded by the renowned Hindu philosopher and a great social  reformer Sree Narayana Guru, is another attraction.
  • Every year thousands of followers of Sree Narayana Guru flow to Varkala on Sivagiri Pilgrimage days. They visit the Samadhi of Guruji (the tomb) and pay tribute to the great teacher who propagated "one caste, one religion and one god for all". 
  • The Sivagiri Pilgrimage is conducted for three days -from 30th of December to 1st of January. Devotees have holy bath in the Papanasini beach and wash off their sins . Many of them consider it as part of Sivagiri Pilgrimage.
  • Tourists can find better accomodation facilities at Varkala and there are many health resorts and top standard hotels assuring better comfort and stay at Varkala. A few Ayurvedic massage centres are also visible here.
  • Odayam Beach: head to Odayam for blissed out Beach living Odayam Beach is a peaceful area in Varkala in south India. Here you can enjoy the silent enviroment, beautiful beaches, good meals, and still have a short distans to shopping and more restaurants by ten minutes walk to the North Cliff in Varkala.
  • Sivagiri: It is a pilgrimage centre in Varkala, India where one of its social reformer and sage Sree Narayana Guru's tomb is located and place where guru was enlightened and got the salvation. The Samadhi (the final resting place) of the Guru here attracts thousands of devotees every year during the Sivagiri Pilgrimage days 30 December to 1 January.
  • The Sivagiri Mutt, built in 1904, is situated at the top of the Sivagiri hill near Varkala Thiruvanathapuram. Even decades after the guru died here in 1928; his samadhi continues to be thronged by thousands of devotees, donned in yellow attire, from different parts of Kerala and outside every year during the Sivagiri Pilgrimage days - 30 December to 1 January.
  • The Sivagiri Mutt is also the headquarters of the Sree Narayana Dharma Sangham, an organization of his disciples and saints, established by the Guru to propagate his concept of 'One Caste, One Religion, One God'. The Guru Deva Jayanti, the birthday of the Guru, and the samadhi day are celebrated in August and September respectively every year. Colourful processions, debates and seminars, public meetings, cultural shows, community feasts, group wedding and rituals mark the celebrations.
