Yuksom is a small historical place surrounded by natural bounty. It is in Geyzing subdivision of West Sikkim. This majestic place was crowned by numerous monasteries and lakes.As per history, Yuksom was the first capital of Sikkim. In 1642 AD, Yuksom was established by Phuntsog Namgyal who was the first religious king of Sikkim. Literally, Yuksom means the “meeting place of the three learned monks”, who came from Tibet. It is also known as the “Throne of Norbugang”. This is the place where the Chogyal, the dynastic rule lasted for 333 years established the first monastery. The name of the monastery is the Dubdi Monastery in 1701. This monastery is a part of Buddhist religious pilgrimage circuit. Apart from monasteries it also consists of historical monuments as well as ancient Gorkhas small Village. Tourism has played an important role in developing the lifestyle of the people residing here. Yuksom is thebest tourism destination and has large influx of mountaineers from all parts of the world as it acts as the base camp for all the trekking trails to mount Khangchendzonga.

Main Attractions
  • Khecheopalri Lake, Yuksom: Khecheopalri Lake is one of the main attraction of Yuksom situated at an altitude of about 6000 ft. It is one of the largest or biggest lakes in Sikkim and a popular tourist places. It is also regarded as one of the sacred lakes of Sikkim. It is the secretion of goddess Tara, who is blessed by Guru Rempoche, according to Buddhist. Several pilgrims come here to visit this lake. One can feed the fishes in the pool and offer prayers.
  • Tashiding Monastery, Yuksom: It is a great religious place for Buddhist Pilgrimage. Tashiding Monastery has a huge significance as per history. It was visited by the Buddhist tantrayana master, 'Guru Padmasambhava' in 8th century A.D. There are around 70 monks residing here. The most important festival celebrated in the monastery is ‘Bhumchhu’.
  • Coronation Throne of Norbugang, Yuksom: It has both religious and historical place where PhuntsogNamgyal was crowned the first Chogyal of Sikkim. Legends believes that three lamas from Tibet came here and used to meet each other. They came here in 1641 to strengthen their hold on Sikkim and to spread Buddhism.
