Kurukshetra is one of the ancient town and a popular pilgrimage of Haryana.  It is known as the land of the Bhagvad Gita and the great epic Mahabharata. It is believed that Kurukshetra was the setting of the 18days war in Mahabharata. The city was also known as various names such as Brahmavedi, Uttarvedi and Dharamkhetra. As per Hindu mythology the region is named after the king Kuru, who was from Bharata dynasty. As per the various excavations in many parts of Kurukshetra proved that the city existed even before the Harappan civilization.

Main Attractions
  • Arunai Temple, Kurukshetra:  It is situated about 6 kms from Pehowa, on Ambala road. The tirth is associated with sages Vishwamitra and Vashishta, both belonging to the times of Mahabharata.
  • Bhadrakali Temple, Kurukshetra:  The temple is in North Thaneshwar. The temple is dedicated to Goddess Kali and showcases her various incarnations. The temple is one of the Sakthi Peeths – the holy place where the lower limb of Goddess Sati fell.
  • Bhishma Kund, Kurukshetra: Bhisham Pitamah, was the fatherly figure revered both by the Kaurvas and Pandavas even though he was siding with the Kaurvas in war of Mahabharata.
  • Birla Mandir, Kurukshetra: The temple is made of pure marble and has a lush garden on its back side. The main complex houses the famous sculpture of Lord Krishna standing on a chariot harnessed with horses on the battle ground of Mahabharata and delivering divine sermon of Bhagwad Gita to the awe-struck Arjun crouching on the ground with folded hands listening with rapt attention.
  • Brahma Sarovar, Kurukshetra: It is a sacred water body in Thanesar. As per mythology Kurukshetra was created by Lord Brahma ensuing a huge Yagna. There is also a statue of Lord Shiva in the sarovar which can be reached via a bridge.
  • Buddhist Monument, Kurukshetra: Lord Buddha is believed to have visited here and many Buddhist monument mark this occasion. Some of these monuments also came up in later years. It is little wonder then, Kurukshetra is also an important pilgrimage site for the Buddhists also.
  • Dharohar, Kurukshetra: The Museum is a center of Haryanavi Folk Culture and Heritage of Haryana. The centre attracts visitors from the world over. The center showcases more than 3000 rare and antique artefacts. Apart from tourists, it also attracts researchers who come here to learn more about the local folk culture, heritage, literature, architecture, music, traditions, etc.
  • Jyotisar, Kurukshetra: Probably among the most venerated pilgrim centers of the world for Hindus, Jyotisar was the place where Lord Krishna delivered the divine knowledge of Bhagwad Gita to Arjuna on the battle field of Kurukshtra. It was the starting point of the battle where conches announcing the war were blown.
  • Krishna Museum, Kurukshetra: A museum dedicated to Sri Krishna was set up by Kurukshetra Development Board in 1987. It was, later shifted to the first block of the existing building. It was inaugurated by the then President of India, Sh. R. Venkataraman.
  • Kalpana Chawla Planterium, Kurukshetra: The intrepid daughter of India ‘Kalpana’ who made her country proud through her historic space journeys was born in Karnal in Haryana. The government of Haryana set up the Kalpana Chawla Memorial Planetarium as a tribute to her memory post her death in the crash of the spacecraft she was travelling in. The planetarium provides a detailed account of her exploits as an astronaut.
  • Kurukshetra Panorama & Science Centre, Kurukshetra:  The centre is located next to the Sri Krishna Museum. The ground floor features interactive science exhibits while on the first floor, a world-class panorama brings alive the Mahabharata war with scientific explanations.
  • Sannihiti Sarovar, Kurukshetra: The sarovar is believed to collect water from all the sacred rivers and tirath especially the seven holy saraswatis on solar Eclipse and Amavasya. It is also believed that bath in the tank accompanied by prayers, donations and rituals bring peace to the souls of departed cheer once.
  • Mini Zoo, Pipli, and Kurukshetra: The zoo is in Pipli which lies on the GT Road, very near to Kurukshetra. The zoo houses a range of animals, birds, and reptiles. Spread across 27 acres, it was set up in 1982. Families come here to see the animals and also enjoy picnics in the shaded areas.
  • Harsh Ka Tila, Kurukshetra: It is a 1km long, 750 meters wide mound located on the outskirts of the city of Kurukshetra. The ancient mound standing 15-18 m high above the ground hides within itself invaluable wealth of information in the form of a variety of historical remnants belonging to periods ranging from Kushan to Mughal era.
  • Light and Sound Show, Kurukshetra: The Government of Haryana has initiated several light and sound programs to highlight the importance of various pilgrim and tourist centers across Kurukshetra region such as Sri Krishna Museum and Jyotisar, the springhead of the immortal Gita Gyan propounded by Lord Krishna.
  • Multi Art Cultural Centre, Kurukshetra: The Multi Art Cultural Centre is in Kurukshetra University and hosts cultural programmes throughout the year. As the name suggests, the centre was set up to promote the rich heritage and culture of the region.
  • O.P. Jindal Park, Kurukshetra: The Park covers an area of 14 acres and the musical fountain located in it is considered the biggest of its kind in the Northern India. It also has a garden which hosts the four feet high torso bust of Sh. O.P. Iindal.
  • Nabhi Kamal, Kurukshetra: It is the name of a temple that was built in Thanesar in Kurukshetra to commemorate this unique event of birth. The temple, therefore, houses the idols of the two gods under the same roof.
  • Saraswati Forest Reserve, Kurukshetra: The forests are rich in flora and fauna, it is home to many birds including native and migratory. The reserve is a great place to relax and picnic away from the crowds and enjoy some peaceful moments in the company of nature.
  • Sheikh Chehli ka Makbara, Kurukshetra: It was a profoundly erudite scholar, a vulnerable sufi saint and a spiritual teacher, Dara shikho. Made of buff stone and the tomb in it is topped with pear shaped marble dome, which is built on a circular drum.
