Uttarkashi is a pilgrimage town and home to several temples. It is located on the banks of the holy Ganges. Literally Uttarkashi means “Kashi or Varanasi of the North”. Being a younger part of the state Uttarakhand, Uttarkashi was formed in 1960. Untouched by industrialism it is one of the most visited city in Uttarakhand. It is a very important tourist destination in India. Uttarkashi is also called as Devbhumi which means ‘Land of the Gods’. This region experiences a sub-tropical climate where tourist can enjoy their journey during daytime. Its eternal beauty attracts a lot of tourist making it a perfect gateway for trekking purpose. It offers several treks for the avid adventurers. Some famous treks are Gaumukh Tapowan, Har Ki Doon and Kedarkantha trek. Uttarkashi is also famous for the Nehru Institute of mountaineering. Apart from this there are several ashrams in Uttarkashi. Due to religious heritage pilgrims from all around the country flock to this region. 

Main Attractions
  • Kashi Vishwanath Temple, Uttarkashi: It is one of the oldest temple in Uttarkashi. It is situated on the bank of Bhagirathi. Inside this there is another Shakti temple dedicated to Goddess Parvati. The main attraction is the huge and heavy trishul (trident) which is 6 meters in height which is estimated 1500 years old.                                                                                                                 
  • Sangam Chatti, Uttarkashi: It is the best trekking tourist spot in Uttarakhand. It is an idellic village set near a gushing mountain stream, and full of green fields. It is 15kms away from Uttarkashi. This trek is surrounded by dense forests of oak, pine and deodar which look beautiful. 
  • Maneri Dam, Uttarkashi: It is another tourist attraction in Uttarkashi. This dam diverts the water into a big tunnel and feeds 90 megawatts about 1,20,000 hp run of the river Tiloth Power Plant.
