Uttarkashi is a pilgrimage town and home to several temples. It is located on the banks of the holy Ganges. Literally Uttarkashi means “Kashi or Varanasi of the North”. Being a younger part of the state Uttarakhand, Uttarkashi was formed in 1960. Untouched by industrialism it is one of the most visited city in Uttarakhand. It is a very important tourist destination in India. Uttarkashi is also called as Devbhumi which means ‘Land of the Gods’. This region experiences a sub-tropical climate where tourist can enjoy their journey during daytime. Its eternal beauty attracts a lot of tourist making it a perfect gateway for trekking purpose. It offers several treks for the avid adventurers. Some famous treks are Gaumukh Tapowan, Har Ki Doon and Kedarkantha trek. Uttarkashi is also famous for the Nehru Institute of mountaineering.
