Formerly Aligarh was known as Allygurh. It is a historic city in the state of Uttar Pradesh. Aligarh is one of the most significant city for learning as there are many educational institutions, colleges and universities. The origin name of this city is obscure. Earlier before the 18th century, the name of Aligarh was Kol or Koil which was given to the city by Balarama. It is a town founded within the year 1804 which was captured by the British then. It was named after the original tribe that lived there. The word “Kol” also represents the entire district or region. Then it was renamed as Ramgarh. Finally, when it was captured by a Shia commander, Najaf Khan, he gave the name Aligarh. It is also home to some famous dargahs. It is one of the largest cities in Uttar Pradesh as well as the 55th largest city in India. It is the place where the battle of Ally Ghur was fought between the French and the British. Some most popular tourist attractions of Aligarh are - Aligarh Fort, Aligarh Muslim University, Baba Barchi Bahadur Dargah, Shekha Lake and others. 

Main Attractions
  • Aligarh Fort, Aligarh: Aligarh Fort or Aligarh Qila is also known as “bohne chor ka qila”. It was built during the time of Ibrahim Lodi by Muhammad. The fort is one of the strongest in India and is surrounded by a deep moat. It became a fortress of great importance under Madhavrao I Scindia in 1759.
  • Sir Syed Academy Museum, Aligarh: It was the residence of Sir Syed Ahmad Khan. Initially the building was used as a Military Mess. In 1972, Vice- Chancellor, Prof. Abdul Aleem completed its renovations work. This building is being used as the office of Sir Syed Academy by the order of Prof. A. M. Khusro since 1974.
  • Baba Barchi Bahadur Dargah, Aligarh: It is a popular religious place in Aligarh which attracts thousands of devotees. It is dedicated to Baba Barchi Bahadur. It is believed that devotee’s wishes get fulfilled after praying here.
  • Shekha Lake, Aligarh: Shekha Lake is also known as Shekha Jheel filled with rich biodiversity. It is a fresh water perennial water body that came into existence after the formation of the Upper Ganges Canal in 1852. November and February is the best month to visit this lake. In winter, tourist can see migratory bird’s arrival.
