Allahabad is a holy city in Uttar Pradesh and the most populous district in the state. Original name of this city is known as Prayag that means “place of offerings”. The great Mughal emperor, Akbar gave the name Allahabad in the year 1583. A magnificent fort is built by him on the banks of the holy Sangam. This region has a great significance for Hindus and plays a central role in Hindu scriptures. Allahabad has equal historical as well as commercial importance.  It is the second oldest city in India. Allahabad is also called as the “Tirth Raj”, the king of all pilgrimage centers. The famous Kumbh Mela is hosted in this religious city after every 12 years that attracts tourists from all over the world. Tourist can see many saints taking holy dip at Triveni Sangam into the confluence of the holy rivers Ganges and Yamuna, and the ancient Saraswati River. The remnants of the colonial architecture reflect the British culture as it remained as an important center during the British period.

  • The Sangam, Allahabad: The Sangam is one of the most popular tourist destination in the city of Allahabad. It is the confluence of the three major rivers of India namely Ganges, Yamuna and ancient Saraswati. Kumbh Mela is held here after every 12 years. It is believed that taking a bath in the holy Sangam is supposed to flush away all of your sins.  
  • Allahabad Fort, Allahabad: This is an ancient fort in Allahabad built by the great emperor Ashoka. Later, it was repaired by Akbar in 1583. The fort comprises of high watchtowers that guard the 3 galleries in the fort complex. It attracts a lot of tourist and also history lovers.
  • Ashoka Pillar, Allahabad: It is another tourist attraction in Allahabad.  It is located outside the Allahabad fort was constructed in the 16th century. It is one the most important attractions of the city.
  • Anand Bhawan, Allahabad: Anand Bhavan is a is a historic museum in Allahabad constructed in the 1930’s. It is the former residence of Nehru family which has now been transformed into a museum after it was donated to the Indian government in the year 1970. It is not only a historic museum but also has a science planetarium planted inside the premises of the mansion.
  • Khusro Bagh, Allahabad: Khusro Bagh is a major Tourist Attraction in Allahabad. The walled garden is a home to three mausoleums which are built in the Mughal style of architecture. The name is given after Khusaru Mirza who rebelled against his father leading to his death and his burial along with his family in the three tombs.
  • Allahabad Museum, Allahabad: Allahabad museum is one of the finest and largest museums of the country situated inside the famous Chandrashekar Azad garden, where he sacrificed his life. It offers the great artefacts of the art, history, archaeology, architecture, environment and literature.
