Bijnor is an important pilgrimage destination in the state of Uttar Pradesh. Bijnor is also known as Bijnaur or Bijnour. This is a historical place related to Mahabharata (one of the Hindu epic). A little is known about the early history of Bijnor. Bijnor’s history is uneventful until the Mutiny of 1857. Then it was occupied by the nawab of Najibabad, a grandson of Zabita Khan. Bijnor consists of numerous ancient ashrams and temples that attracts thousands of tourists from all over India. ‘Sita Mandir Math’ is one of the famous and most visited temple in Bijnor. Radha Krishna Mandir, Panchmukhi Mandir, Shiv Mandir and Chamunda Mandir are other prominent temples in the city. This region is also believed to be the home place to Kanva Rishi’s Ashram. It is said that Queen Shakuntala and the great emperor Bharatha, son of king Dushyanta of Hastinapur were born here that takes you to the Ramayana era. Apart from this there are well-preserved mosques in Bijnor.
