Jaunpur has its own historical, social and political status. Historically, the city was known as Sheeraz-e-Hind. The city was founded by the Sultan of Delhi Feroz Shah Tughlaq. It was named after the Muhammad bin Tughluq. He was also known as Jauna Khan, who was the cousin of Feroz Shah Tughlaq. It is a popular tourist destination situated on the northwest side of Varanasi. According to historical status, Jaunpur was said to be the major center of Urdu and Sufi knowledge and culture. But as years passed by, the city prospered as an important cultural place. This city has held an important position in the field of education. Jaunpur was a beautiful kingdom that did not last for long but has left its mark.  The city consists of several important mosques. Important mosques are The Jama Masjid, Atala Masjid, and the Lal Darwaza Masjid. The Jaunpur mosque has a unique architectural style that combines both Hindu and Muslim themes.

  • Jaunpur Museum, Jaunpur: Jaunpur Museum is one of the most important museum in Jaunpur where history is preserved in the archaeological museum. This muweum is frequently visited by thousands of tourists from all over the world.  
  • Yamdagni Ashram, Jaunpur: Yamdagni is another popular tourist place in Jaunpur. The architecture and style of Yamdagni Ashram are very beautifully made. This picturesque ashram is closely associated with the life of the great and well-known sage in the name of Parashuram.
  • Shahi Bridge, Jaunpur: It is a picturesque bridge which has several names such as - Munim Khan's Bridge, Akbari Bridge, Mughal Bridge or Jaunpur Bridge. Due to several Nepal-Bihar earthquakes, the bridge got damaged but still in use built across the Gomti River.
  • Lal Darwaza Masjid, Jaunpur: Lal Darwaza Masjid is also called as Red Portal mosque or Ruby Gate mosque. It was built by Queen Rajye Bibi (the Queen of Sultan Mahmood Sharqi, a ruler of the Sharqi Dynasty) in 1447. This mosque is dedicated to a saint named Sayyid Ali Dawood Kutubbudin. 
  • Khalis Mukhlis Masjid, Jaunpur: It is another important mosque in Jaunpur. The name of this mosque was given by the Sultan after his chief administrators Malik Khalis and Malik Mukhlis. It was built in 1470 A.D. during the reign of Sultan Ibrahim. 
  • Jami Masjid, Jaunpur: Jaunpur city is known for its mosques. It has become one of the major Tourist Attractions in Jaunpur due to large arrival of tourist and visitors. Jami Masjid is also known as Jama Masjid or Bari Masjid. This masjid was built in the year 1470. Inside there is a massive rectangular hall meant prayers. 
  • Atala Masjid, Jaunpur: Atala Masjid is the chief tourist attractions in Jaunpur. It was was built by Sultan Ibrahim. The construction of this mosque started in 1377 and completed in the year 1408. It is a well-known tourist site visited by a lot of tourists. It is one of the important monuments in the state of Uttar Pradesh.
