Margao is a city Goa. The city is second largest in Goa after Panjim and is known as commercial and cultural capital of Goa. Margao existed since pre Portuguese time and was known as Matha Grama, which was due to 9 temples present in the area. The city is known for Damodar Temple, which was once centre of ancient Margao. Margao is very popular among tourists and has many attractions for them some of them being Closed Market, Municipal Building, municipal garden, Ana Fonte Springs, Mercado Velho, Holy Spirit Church and grand colonial mansions.

Main Attractions
  • Church of Holy Spirit: This is the largest church of Margao and firstly it was constructed in 1564 AD. The present church was built in 1589 AD decorated in 1595.
  • Sri Damodar Temple: This is one of the sacred places for Hindus repose in Goa. The specialities of this temple is- this temple is visited by both communities of People, Hindus and Christians.
  • Our Lady of Grace Church: This is a military church with a remarkably modern building. Our Lady of Grace Church is situated in the heart of Margao and has spacious places.
  • Colva Beach: This beach is famous tourist spot in South Goa. This Beach is fully commercialized beach with restaurants, pubs and bars etc.
  • Loutolim: Situated at 10 km away from Margao, Loutolim is renowned for its for beautiful colonial mansions. One of the major attractions of the town is Ancestral Goa Museum along with that it houses Saviour of the World Church, which is another major attractions.
  • Town Square: It is the city centre of the town and is the most popular landmark of the city. This amazing place is surrounded by twin gardens and other key architectural monuments. It is also known for its public library.
  • Jorge Barreto Park, Margao: One of the major attraction of Margao. The park was founded on 1905 and the arched corridor is the main attraction of this park.

  • By Road- The town is well linked by road to other cities such as Mangalore, Udupi, Karwar, Mumbai, and Ratnagiri by national highway 17.
