Chandrapur is a small medieval town in Chandrapur district of the Nagpur division of the state of Maharashtra. Founded in 13th century by the then Gond chieftain Khandakya Ballalshah Chandrapur town is geographically located on the very shores where Irai and Zarpat rivers unite. The fact that the city is the seat of huge coal and lime stone reserves earned it the pseudonym of Black Diamond City. The mammoth reserves attracted heavy industry in the town and the major employers include, Coal India, Chandrapur Super Thermal Power Station, Maharashtra State Power Generation Company, Manikgarh Cement, Ultra Tech Cement, Chandrapur Cement Works, Maratha Cement Works, Ballarpur Industries Limited, Chandrapur Ferro Alloy Plant – largest manganese based ferro alloy producer of the country and Steel Authority of India’s silico-manganese division. 
The ancient and original city was fenced between the walls with four gates, one in each direction to enter the garrison town whose nomenclature is as follows Jatpura Gate, Anchaleshwar Gate, Pathanpura Gate and Binba Gate and four windows to enter the city Bagad Khidki, Hanuman Khidki, Vithoba Khidki and Chor Khidki.    
 
Main Attractions
  • Anandvan Ashram: This hinterland sprawling in 465 hectares is a rehabilitation village for leprosy patients, started by noted humanitarian Baba Amte. The inhabitants are self-sustained and earn their livelihood by means of agriculture and other small scale enterprises supported by the organization Maharogi Seva Samiti. The village or community today is equipped with an orphanage, a college, two hospitals, a school for the blind and another for deaf and approximately 5000 people bank on it for their earnings.
  • Chandrapur Fort: Reflecting tribal art and style of building, Chandrapur fort was commissioned by Gond ruler Khandakya Ballalshah upon discovering and establishing the town. The land fort though now in its remnants is famous of its eight accesses [four doorways and four windows or jharokhas] leading to and from the city in clockwise fashion Jatpura Gate, Bagad Khidki, Anchaleshwar Gate, Hanuman Khidki, Pathanpura Gate, Vithoba Khidki, Binba Gate and Chor khidki [a khidki is the hindi translation for a window].  
  • Taboda Andhari Tiger Reserve: Spread in an area of 623 kilometers this 28th tiger reserve of India comprises of Taboda National Park and Andhari Wildlife Sanctuary. The rugged Taboda forests are full of teak vegetation and a natural lake and the scenic tracks here have rightly earned it the epithet “Jewel of Vidharbha”. Kingdom animalia residing in the forest include tigers, hyaenas, bears, leopards, deers, sambhars, jackals, blue bulls, wild dogs etc.
  • Vijasan Hills: A place of religious importance, Vijasan Hills are home to Buddhist Temples and shrines in an area called Bhadravati. The shrines or caves believed to be 2000 years old and are very mystifying. The main feature is an ensemble of 3 caves, each with a captivating hand curved Buddha sculpture. Other features of the place are Nag Mandir and Bhavani Mata Mandir which is connected to Mahakali temple in Chandrapur Fort by means of a 22 kilometers long tunnel.
