Khandala is also a popular hill station in the Western Ghats of the state Maharashtra, located around 3km from Lonavala. It is situated at an altitude of about 625 meters at the edge of the magnificent Sahyadris surrounded by scenic grassy hills, enchanting valleys and beautiful lakes. In 1871, Lord Elphinstone, who was the Governor of Bombay Presidency discovered the both places -Lonavala and Khandala. Khandala as a beautiful hill station has witnessed many rise and the fall of several kingdoms even the colonial power of European countries. It is said that Chattrapati Shivaji, the founder of the first Maratha Empire, ruled the area around Khandala. Later it came under the Peshwa rulers who founded the second Maratha Empire. Khandala is a tourist utopia blessed with splendorous scenery. It also provides a popular gateway from the hustle and bustle of cities of Mumbai and Pune. Travelers throng this place to escape the hectic city lifestyle. There are several tourist attractions that promises a lot more fun than just the alluring panoramic views of the hill station.
