Kolhapur has a beautiful cultural history dated back to 17th Century. Nested in the tranquil laps of the Sahyadri mountain ranges this city is one of the oldest civilizations of the country, situated at the banks of River Panchganga. Because of its spiritual history, Kolhapur is renowned as a holy place. This destination is also known as Dakshin Kashi. Kolhapur was founded by Chhatrapati Tarabai, under the reign of Chhatrapati’s of Kolhapur. In the ancient time, it is a major city in the state of Maharashtra. Kolhapur entered into treaty with the HEIC after the collapse of the Maratha confederacy in 1812. It indicates that Satwahan period there was wealthy and cultured population staying there after the during excavations on the hill and the research on items found there. It is also known as Historical capital of Maharashtra. Kolhapur as a tourist destination is famous for many magnificent temples, palaces, monuments, forts, lakes and gardens. This is a town of goddess Mahalakshmi blessed with blissful nature. It is believed that pilgrims worshiping Lord Balaji at Tirupati, also visit this temple to offer prayer and is essential to complete the pilgrimage tour.  Aside this, Kolhapur city is famous for Kolhapuri Chappal, Kolhapuri ornaments with unique designs and others.

  • The Mahalaxmi Temple,Kolhapur: Kolhapur is also known by this famous temple named ‘The Mahalaxmi Temple’. This is the main reason why Kolhapur is known as Dakshin Kashi. This temple is also known as Ambabai. There is a strong believe that after worshiping Lord Balaji at Tirupati, devotee offers prayer to Devi Mahalakshmi is essential to complete the pilgrimage tour. It has a great architectural importance and became one of greatest tourist attractions in Kolhapur.
  • Chatrapati Shahu Museum, Kolhapur: Chatrapati Shahu Maharaja is also known as the brain behind the development of Kolhapur. It is another popular tourist destination partly converted into a museum. It houses some famous paintings and artefacts which depicts the court life of early aristocratic family surrounded by a beautifully landscaped gardens, zoo and lake flowing by which gives a real visual treat to the visitors.
  • Rankala Lake, Kolhapur: Rankala Lake is a picturesque lake in Kolhapur. It is a famous spot nowadays for Kolhapur residents. There is a Rankabhairav temple located at the centre of lake. The temple is architecturally carved and is a great visual treat to the tourists. It is said that prior to 8th century, this historical place was just a stone quarry. But after an Earthquake that took place during 9th century, some natural structural change took place in the quarry and due to opening of an underground source, water started accumulating in this quarry.
