We should acknowledge the efforts of British, for if it had not been their unfluctuating endeavor to look out for new ways and places to combat the scorching heat waves of Indian summer many of our hilly havens including Panchgani would never have been discovered and lost in obscurity.
Spotted by British superintendant John Chesson during the time of Raj in 1860, Panchgani comprises of five villages in the close periphery - Dhandeghar, Godavli, Amral, Khingar, and Taighat. Unlike Mahabaleshwar which was unthinkable residency during monsoons Panchgani was pleasant throughout the year and thus was chosen as a retirement dwelling for English. Caressed by [five mountains of] Shayadri Mountain Range and touched by river Krishna Panchgani is in close proximity to Pune, Mahabaleshwar, Satara and Wai.
Ever since the opening of tuberculosis sanatorium in 1940 by Dr. Rustomji Bomanji Billimoria Panchgani has become a preferred place for convalescence. Another institution for which the town is known for, are a score of superlative school and boardings. The first started in 1890s by European settlers, a Roman Catholic school for their children, the phenomenal success and educational genius of which inspired many communities to open up their own mission schools and today there is no dearth of academic institutions in the area.

Main Attractions
  • Table Land: The hills surrounding Panchgani are surmounted by a volcanic plateau second highest only after Tibetan Plateau. These barren stretches of land or plateaus are also known by the name of “Table Land”. The plateaus 1387 meters above the sea level command an all encompassing view of the Krishna Valley and the town. Arrangements for Paragliding and other adventure sports have been made of the cliffs.
  • Sydney Point: Named after Sir Sidney Beckwarth, a short tenure Governor of Bombay in 1830s, this mount too offers a very captivating view of the Krishna Valley much like the Table Point. Kamalgarh Fort, Dhom dam, hills of Pandavgad and Mandhardeo and the city of Wai can be seen from this point.
  • Parsi Point: En route to Mahabaleshwar from Panchgani one comes across this panoramic point from where one can get a good glimpse of the sparkling waters of Dhom dam. The popularity of the spot can be gauged by the fact that this very point is the cause of many traffic jams at the spot because travelers going towards Mahabaleshwar stop their cars and to view the point.
  • Kate’s Point: Another Point, 7 kilometers ahead of main town, Kate’s Point also is an excellent elevation to have an aerial view of surrounding Pandavgad and Mandhardeo ranges, Kamalgarh and Dhom dam. The mount is in close vicinity to Echo Point and Needle Hole Point. The point was named after the daughter of Sir John Malcolm.
  • Lingmala Falls: 1.5 kilometers from Panchgani on Panchgani-Mahabaleshwar Road spans a beautiful picnic spot the Lingmala Falls, water here descends from an elevation of 500 meters. The most suitable time to visit the place is during monsoons when the fall it is said is torrential. The surrounding ambience is very pleasant with some great angles to take photographs.
  • Rajpuri Caves: According to the parables, Hindu God Kartikeya, son of Lord Shiva once inhabited these caves to perform austerities and penance. Mighty Pandavas [from Mahabharata] also are said to have spend some time in these caves during the 13 years of their exile. The area of caves is skirted with many small and big kunds or ponds, whose water is considered to have curative powers.                                                                                                                The entrance of the caves is highlighted with inscriptions on stone plates and two statues of Nandi facing away from each other. One of the caves carries an old statue of Lord Kartikeya and all the caves are connected via a sunken tunnel. Water descends from one of the caves from an opening shaped like a ‘Gomukh’.
  • Devari Art Village: If you are a patron of art and celebrate creativity and originality, then this is one place you simply cannot afford to not visit. This village is a nonprofit effort which promots the Adivasi craftsmanship. The artisans and craftsmen from Gadchiroli area by making use of wax, stone, leaves, trees, branches, metal, dead animals and coloring them with some imagination and traditional artistry make fantastic pieces of contemporary art.
  • Devil’s Kitchen: Laying in the vicinity of Table Point this is believed to be the point where Pandavas stayed for a while and used to have their kitchen at this place.
