Bijapur is one of the largest districts in the state of Karnataka. Officially it is known as Vijayapura. Bijapur is an ancient city and the land of five rivers and the domain of different cultures. It lies in the Deccan Plateau. Originally it is also known as the Queen of Deccan. Bijapur was the capital of the Adil Shahi kings (1489-1686). It is a great tourist destination that holds many monuments of historical importance that was built during the Adil Shahi dynasty. The city was referred as Vijayapura ("City of Victory") during the reign of Chalukyas. The city came under the influence of the Khilji Sultanate in Delhi by the late 13th century.  It was assigned to the princely state of Satara after passed into the hands of the British East India Company. In 1885, Bijapur was made the administrative headquarters of the district. Bijapur District was part of the Bombay Presidency when it was under control of the British Raj. It is one of the richest districts in the state of Karnataka. Tourist from different places visit Bijapur city to enjoy the beauty of ancient monuments.  Best time to visit this city is winters as people can roam easily to various destinations.

Main Attractions
  • Gol Gumbaz, Bijapur: It is the most famous attraction in Bijapur. The word Gol Gumbaz literally means round dome. It is the mausoleum of Mohammed Adil Shah, who was the sultan of Bijapur. It is an important monument of Indo-Islamic architecture aptly known for its amazing dimensions and unique acoustic features.
  • Ibrahim Rauza, Bijapur: Ibrahim Rauza is one of the famous popular heritage monuments. It was constructed by Ibrahim Adil Shah II. It is one of the top five historical monuments in the heritage city of India. It is a beautiful building constructed in the 17th century inspired by the world famous monument Taj Mahal in Agra.
  • Bara Kamaan, Bijapur: It is an incomplete mausoleum of Ali Adil Shah II in Bijapur that is located in the state of Karnataka. Now this site is managed by the Archaeological Survey of India. Malik Sandal was the architect of Bara Kaman. It gives you the feeling of how the kings who ruled ancient India regarded life and death.
  • Bijapur Fort, Bijapur: Bijapur Fort has a plethora of historical monuments of architectural importance. It was built during the rule of Adil Shahi dynasty who ruled for nearly 200 years in Bijapur. It is an example of grandeur, strength, longevity and a symbol of pride. This fort reflects the architectural style of Ottoman Turkish, Persian and the Allied arts.
  • Asar Mahal, Bijapur: Asar Mahal of Bijapur was built by Mohammed Adil Shah as a Hall of Justice. It’s out of bounds for women. It is built in an Indo Islamic mixture of architecture. In the 17th century many parts of this building were constructed before years. There are several carvings and paintings on the walls of the palace.  
  • Jumma/Jama Masjid, Bijapur: It is a popular mosque in the state of Karnataka. After the victory over Vijaya Nagara at the Battle of Rakkasagi, this mosque was built by Ali Adil Shah I in the year 1578. It is one of the largest mosques in South India. Bijapur has many famous domes but Jamiya Masjid's dome is one of the finest domes among all.
